Leaving for Hawaii next month - Need Help

Aloha kakou, I was back in Hawai`i for 5 weeks last summer. One of my pumps burned out while I was gone and I lost a couple of fish and a leather coral. It was still worth it. Have fun. Malama pono, Chris P.

What type of salt do you prefer?

I started with CrystalSea marinemix but I've since switched over to Oceanic. I think it dissolves faster and clearer.

    anyone use ?

Aloha e Kitteness, Changing salts, whether switching brands or moving from purchased saltwater to home brewed, should not cause your tank to cycle. But it should probably be done gradually since any formulation of salts will introduce different ratios of trace minerals into your tank.

    saltwater store in redmond area?

Aloha kakou, Back in my freshwater days, Denny's was my favorite store. They had a good selection of fish and plants and the staff was easy to deal with. I've only been there once since they opened their new saltwater section and it looked pretty sad. I just chalked it up to that section...

    PSAS September Frag Swap

Oh well. If anyone has a hammer or candycane frag they wish to part with, please bring it to the swap. I'll have some small monti. cap. frags, a kenya tree or two, and some cash with me. I'm also not too proud to accept charity frags. ;)

    PSAS September Frag Swap

Is there any consideration of having a live sand bin? Everyone brings some live sand, it gets tossed in the bin and mixed up, then everyone leaves with the same amount that they brought. It's a good opportunity to introduce a little diversity.

    PSAS September Frag Swap

Can anyone give me some more details on how this frag swap works? Do I just show up with a baggie full of fresh cut corals? Should they be attached to rocks or free-floating? I've got Kenya Trees, Pom-pon Xenia, and Mont. Cap. that are all getting a bit big for their britches.

My Pom-pom Xenia completely melted away, gone, no trace; then a couple of months later came roaring back. I've now got two large colonies of it.

Visiting Seattle & Portland Area..... any good LFS?

Sierra is mostly a small pet store with some FW fish. Blue Sierra is their SW location, it's only about 5 minutes further along I-90.

    Lighting For a 55 Gallon

If he's got a 55g acrylic with a center brace, then a single bulb might not be the best setup. I've got 2x250 Ushio 10k and 2x110w VHO Actinic on my 55g.

    should i have a sump ?

Aloha kakou, Water changes are definetly easier with a sump. My FW tank (no sump) has to endure water being pumped out and then fresh water being dumped back in. Not to mention the hassle factor of hoisting buckets. By contrast, the reef tank (with sump) has a hose adaptor plumbed into the...

    should i have a sump ?

Aloha e Mountain, A sump is an additional reservoir of water, usually located beneath your display tank. It increases your tank's overall water volume as well as giving you an out-of-sight location for equipment such as protein skimmers, heaters, et al. A sump can be as simple as a tupperware...
