are there any red acroporas or similar that glow neon red under actinics

Hello, Although there are a few red SPS (Red Planet, A. cytherea) I don't know of any that fluoresce. Regards, Kevin

    Help with bleaching SPS

Hello, Sudden swings in alkalinity often cause bleaching in Acropora corals. Regards, Kevin

    SPS Coral Macro Pictures

Let's see some of your macro shots. I know some of you have some nice corals and cameras. I just used my phone camera for these yesterday. It's a Galaxy 3s set on macro. Cheers, Kevin Montipora undata. Seriatopora hystrix. Acropora formosa. Acropora cytherea. Seriatopora caliendrum.

    SPS Frags on their side

Hello, There are no soft and squishy SPS corals :) SPS stands for small polyp stony corals. Corals without a hard stony skeleton are generally referred to as soft corals in this hobby. Leather and or tree corals look best when mounted perpendicular like a terrestrial tree. One of the best ways...

    fragging a leather...

Hello, It makes little difference as they grow so quickly. Both parts will grow just fine without an advantage either way. Cheers, Kevin

Whats going on with my coral?

Hello, The coral is Hydnophora most likely rigida species. Dripping of tissue is a reproductive strategy used by some stony corals. Cheers, Kevin

Opening up corals & Nitrate Issues

Hello, A picture of the corals would be helpful. I think an additional light on the refugium would help too. For around $25 you could mount a clip-on light/reflector with a spiral compact florescent bulb (6500K) in it that would work very well. Sorry I haven't used or tested enough LED lighting...

Opening up corals & Nitrate Issues

Hello, Nitrate control is a fairly simple process. Elevated nitrates are a result of adding more food or nitrates than are being exported. In mature tanks this can only come from food or the water change/top-off water (in a new tank nitrates can come from the curing process of the live rock). To...

Spongodes Monti spreading on live rock, best way to stop this?

I mix the kalk to a honey consistency and apply it with an old test kit syringe. Just lay a bead along the edge where you want the coral to die off. It will harden quickly. Make sure you don't have high water flow right on the area for a few min. Regards, Kevin

Spongodes Monti spreading on live rock, best way to stop this?

Hello, I keep mine isolated on the sand for that very reason. Kalk paste will kill it but it will grow back unless you move the parent rock it is on away from your live rock. Cheers, Kevin

    Galaxy ?

Hello, The genus Galaxea have some of the most powerful stinging sweeper tentacles of any coral and will kill almost all corals they touch. Their reach is up to 12" and they could easily kill a snail although it is uncommon. Regards, Kevin

    need some assistance

Hello, Algae is a sign of elevated nutrient levels. One way to reduce nutrient levels is by performing a 15-25% or so water change every 2-4 weeks. If you are using mineral free water IE distilled or DI the main source of nutrients will be from food or additives you put in. Starvation of the...

    SPS Frags on their side

Hello, For small polyp stony species it makes little difference regarding mounting orientation over time. Some of the heavier branched corals develop a more secure base when glued sideways. The ends will quickly (in a week or so) grow tissue over them and produce either a single corallite or...
