    water temperature

I tried the fan approach last night. It lowered my water temperature to just 77 degrees this morning. It was definitely cooler in the North East yesterday but the tank temp was 81 when i clipped it on around 8 pm. I'm curious to see the temp after a light cycle today. I also lowered the fan...

    Water Temperature ??

Uuuuughhh, it has reached 84 at the end of a light cycle. I am going to turn off 1 poerhead and see if that helps get through the summer. I started to put in an icepack in the morning. Should help a little and only change the temp slowly if at all

Placement for xenia and how to attach

WOW, I am jealous. I still have trouble keeping xenia alive in my tank. Everything else does mostly fine. Having to weed and prune is a nice luxury to have.

What Brand of Coral food to use?

Anyone have any info on feather dusters. Had a white aqnd brown one that looked cool and happy. Now he has terminally retracted. What conditions do they prefer ? I was told they are filter feeders so I don"t need to do anything different than what I'm feeding my existing softies ( I know they...

    iodine for xenia

I'll go the other way and recommend dosing iodine. It is the only thing that allowed me to keep it healthy. everyone's water chemistry is different based on the starting water, type of salt, food, skimmer. Sometimes it is a matter of what works for you. For me, iodine was great for my xenia.

    xenia is gone...

Morgan - I believe most studies show that the results are inconclusive. Perhaps not iodine specific but the interaction with the overall tank chemistry. In my case after not being able to stop it from melting many times over a few months, I believe it is not coincidence that as soon as I started...

i am new and need a lot of help.....

Anyone have a suggestion for a good quality small powerhead ? I bough the Seio 820gph yesterday and don't like the way it looks in my tank. Too big. I was thinking of ordering the quiet one 3000. Seems to be a bit more compact and hopefully less notieceable. Also, since I have built my rock up...

    xenia is gone...

Very interesting article and something to consider. What i am learning is that no 2 tanks are the same. The chemistry is impacted on the inhabitants, husbandry, filter medium, type of water etc. I can have two types of mushrooms next to each other and one thrives and one melts. I think it is...

    xenia is gone...

I had also been feeding less to try and control nitrates, not sure if that contributed but he looked fine the last time I saw him. Maybe a sting from the anemone ? I'll likely never know.

    xenia is gone...

Iodine, Iodine, Iodine. I couldn"t get xenia to grow in my tank. It typically lasted for 1-2 weeks and then melted. I read here about using iodine for xenia. Bought a test kit and realized it was only running around .01. Slowly doesed over a week and brought it close to .06. In a matter of days...

    Nitrates

I have a sump. How does the Chaeto work ? Is it like converting to a refugium ? Would I need lighting for the sump ? or is it more like a filter medium where you can just toss it in the sump ?

    Nitrates

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'm not sure if it is detrimental to have higher than suggested nitrates. I am not certain of the impact. Your tank does seem to do better than mine though as I can't get all my zoas to remain open. Also, just started to have some success with xenia. Iodine...

    Nitrates

I'll check on the test kit but I don"t think it is too old as I have only had the tank since November. Maybe it sat on the shelf at the lfs.

    Nitrates

Can we raise the nitrate question again. I have never been able to get mine lower than 20-40. I do weekly 10-15% water changes. I had been feeding small amounts daily but am now experimenting with less frequesnt feedings. I have a sump without bio balls. It does have sponges but I clean them a...

    new and acquiring good equipment

You clearly have knowledge as this has been my experience. Fortunately, it is in sump. The erratic behavior is the problem. I set the dial control and all seems fine and then sometimes it suddenly starts producing skimmate. I have left the cabinet open and watched this occur. Also, sometimes it...

Thanks. Never know when it is worth spending versus staying with existing equipment.

    new and acquiring good equipment

Does anyone have experience with the coralife needle wheel skimmer ? I am currently using it and it appears to be working reasonably well but have I have nothing to compare it to at the moment. I don"t want to upgrade to a more expensive model if there is not much benefit. I checked with a few...

    lighting

Thanks, I will ease them back into the light of day . Hopefully I can revive them. I was really surprised at how beautiful the toadstool was with all the polyps extended.

    lighting

I'm not sure. I was off on vacation for a week and had someone come in to perform maintenance. I would have hoped he checked as he was there during the day. I only see the MH lights on weekends given my schedule. Yesterday i came home at night shortly after they would have turned off and things...
