    Coral ID, please? :D

If not Goniopora, I would say Alveopora. Difficult to tell without the polyps all the way extended.

    T5 light question

I haven't used the ATIs because nobody near me carries them. I'm a fan of the Geismann bulbs though, and run those in conjunction with 20,000k halides. I get great color out of my corals with them. One of these days I'll order the ATIs and see if I like them better :)

    What is this ?

I have a couple of what appear to be the same variety in my tank. If you happen to decide you don't want it there, Tiger Cowries apparently enjoy munching on them.... at least mine did. :-)

    Green Mandarins

Most LFS should be able to order in a captive conditioned or captive bred Mandarin. If they discuss it with their suppliers, generally they could find out what type of food is being fed to the critters prior to shipping.

    Duncan ?

Feed them pretty much any small meaty food. Mysis is good, reef plankton, nutramar ova, cyclopeze, mine like finely chopped jumbo shrimp. Did the duncan fall on top of anything when it came off? Something that may have stung it? Many times, after handling, they will stay closed up for a...

New to the are of SW Aquarium

Ditto on that one. It's a great book. :) Mike, if you have an interest in any other reading material, I have a list of some books that have served me well. (Reading is another or my hobbies, my house could be a library/public aquarium.)

    RBTA feeding ?

Just make sure whatever you get is raw, not cooked. Any type of raw seafood from the meat counter would be fine, like fish filets, shrimp, scallops, mussels, etc. As for packaged frozen fish foods, mine like frozen krill, clams, squid, and mysis. I just chop or break it into small pieces...

New to the are of SW Aquarium

Mike, since you are going mostly FOWLR and some of the fish you are interested in are on the larger side, assume your bioload will be on the "high" end. There really isn't a specific way to calculate bioload, but here are a couple of things to consider: Adult size of fish, (inches of fish per...

New to the are of SW Aquarium

For overflows, check out: CPR AQUATIC, INC - CS Overflows Some (and only some) recommended skimmer brands (hugely differs based on opinion) are Bubble Magus, Hydor, Reef Dynamics... there are so many out there, I picked up a Coralife skimmer C-H-E-A-P when I set up my tank. It's not a great...

    Hello from CDA, ID

The refugium will be a nice addition to your tank and will enable you to better supply copepods and other reef bugs as a food source to the fish in your tank. It will also help with phosphate control without using chemicals and additional equipment. Fish like the Mandarin Dragonet require a...

    Hello from CDA, ID

Mike, through July 19, petco is running a sale on tanks, $1.00 per gallon for 55 gallon and smaller. Combined with some sheet acrylic and a little time, this is an easy way to create your own sump for little money. Yes, you will probably pay more overall than just purchasing a backpack skimmer...

Think my sea urchin is in trouble...based on various readings

Aside from what has already been mentioned, urchins and starfish should never be deliberately exposed to air while handling. They have no way of purging air from their bodies. Your LFS should have told you that when they explained acclimation. Exposure to air will not necessarily be lethal but...

I need a Zoanthid eating fish!

You need a Diminovula alabaster. It's a type of false Cowry. They feed on soft corals, and are particularly known to eat Zoas.

how do you kill bubble algae

Emerald crab lips! What an image. I once saw one of my giant bristleworms swallow a bubble whole... looked like he swallowed a ping-pong ball. My emerald crab doesn't do as much as I would like, but he gets into places I can't reach. I just pluck the larger bubbles off when I see them...

    i have a question

Live sand/rock is an integral part of the biological filtration necessary for a healthy saltwater aquarium, whether you are keeping corals or not. I'm not sure where the idea that you don't need biological filtration if you aren't keeping corals comes from. There are other ways to do biological...

I did my weekly water change at 2am the other day... ;-p

    spider web looking stuff

Your tank looks great! On the topic of your original post, my first thought was the mucous feeding strands that are secreted by the vermetid snails. They can often become a nuissance and irritate corals, but are commonly found in the reef aquarium. So if you see them again, check to see if...

    Invert ID ID Please

Does it have a hard shell covering most of its body? If so, it is likely a Stomatella. The shell often blends in so well with the body that it is difficult to see, but if you touch it, you can tell the shell is hard. I have a couple in my tank, they are reef safe, similar to any common...

    Quick question

I have some issues with the same hair algae in my 29 gal. So far an emerald crab and a couple of lettuce nudis have put a serious dent in the problem. :-) I know that wasn't your question, but I've never tried biozorb... I may have heard of it, but I'm not sure.
