was just checking my water parameters , when I happen to glance at my war coral it has about 10 or so of those bubble algae thingies on it, how do I kill those buggers before they over take my coral?

I wanted to just pop them but then I remember reading somewhere that they can put out a poison toxin in water

I need to catch this before it spreads in my tank

all parameters are perfect

think It snuck in under my radar last month when I added the coral

do not pop ull spread spores allthroughout the system. get urself an emrald crab itl be gone in couple days once aclimated and will keep it in check and all other hair type algea too.

agree on the NOT popping in tank water, will multiple them like crazy.

emerald crab are best, but have seen copperband or golden semivartus butterflies eat them...i have a golden butterfly in QT now that eat all of them that was on a small live rock...

i would only put 1 emrald crab in a 37g tank i only have 1 in my 90 and does a great job of cleaning all of my rock and if uve seen my build i have allot of it.

I don't buy the don't pop em or your tank is doomed thing. just common sence that the emeralds don't swallow the bubble whole like a pill. while eating on them they would have pop it eventually right? also, I had a nice column of prob 20 bubbles when I threw in a couple crabs, yes they went to work on them but the broke that column loose and I had bubbles everwhere the first day.

never said tank will be doomed just will release the spores inside and can spread every where including filtration fuge sump. have u ever watched a crab eat 1 the pluck it off start at the bottom and suck out the insides then mow it down.

just sayin that I mostly hear horror stories if you pop one.

Can't belive thought that an emerald crab has lips and can form a seal on the bubble algae as it pops and suck it all out without any getting into the water. thats what I'm geting at.

I do know that they will spread like mad if you go poping them in your system. If your goal is to get rid of them then get somthing that eats them. If you are carfull you can try and manuall remove them just dont break them open. Good luck =)

If you can take the coral out of the tank and pic the bubbles off. Emeralds will eat them whole if they are small enough. If they are too big, emeralds wont touch them.
You should have seen my 75 gal tank a couple years ago. You could not see rock under all the bubble algae. It just took some persistance and determination and removing the rock one at a time and picking the bubble algae off. I challenge anyone to find a bubble algae in my 75 now.
Your tank is not doomed if you have an outbreak, but it is a LOT of work to beat it.

DO NOT POP even one in your tank!

Oh, I would pick off some of the small bubbles, and surprisingly, my yellow tang would eat them. They had to be small though.

well I QT the coral will attempt to remove in am thank god its only a small frag
you think a fw bath after i remove will help

+1 on Emerald Crabs but not dime size but nickle size work best and survivability is higher. Also Bubble algae is now in your tank so how much at you feeding your tank? High nutrients feed the algaes we don't like. So what's your tank perimeters? This can help greatly in your overall recovery.

A saltwater bath/rinse will always help. You dont want to dip most coral in fresh water.

just a note of caution on Emerald Crabs. I picked one up at Barrier Reef during the sale in June. Got him home and a few nights later noticed him ignoring the bubble algae but going to town on my Pocilipora coral. I know they are supposed to be reef safe, but thats not always the case, they will nip at corals, I watched mine doing it for 3 nights in a row before I had me a little episode of Deadliest Catch and caught me some crab!

nitrite 0 ppm
nitrate 1 ppm
ammonia 0 ppm
ph 8.0 ppm
temp 78*-80*
salinity 1.025

ok great thanks

Your water parameters look real good.
You should not have any problems if you can get the frag out and pick the algae off without popping them. Watch all new frags for algaes. Best to set up a QT to put them in for a few weeks to watch for these kinds of things before putting them in your DT.
Not that most of us do that, but it is a good idea. lol!
Another algae to keep an eye out for that is extremely difficult to get rid of is Bryopsis.

Emerald crab lips! What an image.
I once saw one of my giant bristleworms swallow a bubble whole... looked like he swallowed a ping-pong ball.

My emerald crab doesn't do as much as I would like, but he gets into places I can't reach. I just pluck the larger bubbles off when I see them. It helps if you can take the coral or rock out of the tank, then you don't have to worry so much about popping them. Just grab a small tub of tank water, and rinse the coral before putting it back in the DT. A soft toothbrush helps to remove any residue from the rock/skeleton.

If you have a QT, but don't want an emerald in your tank, see if you can get a 'loaner' crab from the LFS and let it do some work on the coral/rock in the QT. I had a coral skeleton that was covered in tiny bubbles. They were too small to pick off and stuck between the ridges of the skeleton. A QT with an emerald crab made quick work of it.

pulled coral out today removed all the bubbles ,
looks good so far I will monitor it in QT a couple weeks before returning to main tank
as for emerald crab Ill pass I see how much damage the hermits do to coral , there being removed 1 by 1 till all out of main tank and rehomed in fuge
