Hello! Im a bit of a newby to the salt world.

What are your calcium and magnesium levels? It is highly unlikely alk is actually at zero. The live rock will help buffer and stabilize the system. Test ca, mg, alk, and salinity and post here please. It is a lot to take in when you are just getting started. Try to make it to a meeting and...

    Tempered glass?

looks mostly. the overflow will come out the back of the tank then head down vs. coming out the bottom. it will end up with pipe showing in the rear rather than it all be hidden under the stand. functionally there is little difference. jon

One Spot foxface, Male or Female

to me, that looks like stress marks. does the fish ever lighten or darken those markings? they have the ability to change pattern and color, and the black across the back generally means it's stressed. are there any other fish in the system picking on the fish? is it eating well? what size...

    Tempered glass?

typically speaking from my experience the sides are rarely tempered, but the bottom of mass produced tanks are almost always tempered. at the center with tanks of unknown origin we drill the back panels to be safe and have never had one shatter. we have lost a couple of small tanks from...

    We got a NEW TANK!!!

Thanks to a VERY generous donation from a local, we now have a 180g reef tank on display! It is full of frogspawn and not much else. We will be fragging it out for trades as soon as everything settles from the move. Stop on by next time you are in Poulsbo, WA and check it out! P.S. We are...

The Conscientious Marine Aquarist by Bob Fenner is a great book as well. if you are ever over in Poulsbo on the weekend stop into the Marine Science Center. we now have 2 reef tanks set up and you can take a look at how they are put together. ask for jon (that's me) and i can show you...

i had a copperband that would eat clams. not really heard of anyone else having this happen, but mine LOVED 'em. never saw him eat snails.

    Anyone Know why?

even with dipping corals, a bacteria can ride in on anything. a fish, a rock, anything. one drop of water from our tanks contains enough microbes to jumpstart a new tank. diseases and all. zoa's are a colonial coral. as suggested above, you may want to cut out the dying/sick zoa's and dip...

The inaugural meeting of the Coldwater reefers.

hmm, i want to try and make this as well. i'm going diving for an octopus on this day i think, maybe i can push it to sunday. i'd love to see some personally owned CW tanks. jon

    Anyone Know why?

there are a couple of things it could be. most likely, it's a bacteria. your best bet is a lugols dip every couple of days. i'm trying to remember the exact disease i'm thinking of, but it's been a few years since i've dealt with it. but, a lugols dip is the best solution, that i remember...

I had an idea for Sump/Refugium set up

this is how i did the refugium at the center. it is a roughly 10g tank plumbed to the sump of the main tank. i personally like seeing the fuge. it offers a different perspective on our reef tanks. plus it's AMAZING to see just how many little critters are moving around in there. you could...

    Adding another clown?

it really does work well. i had a much better one that i made out of acrylic but i can not seem to find the picture of it. the added benefit is keeping a close eye on new additions to the tank. if they start to show any signs of ich or stress it's SUPER EASY to pull them out and hospitalize...

    Adding another clown?

i used to use a small container in the tank to acclimate similar fish together. it works great. keeps the fish from fighting, get's them used to seeing them. doesn't take long for them to accept their new neighbors. i used this. it was also my DIY fish trap. it is just a little beta tank...
