    Lets Talk Heaters!!!

I hate heaters! I have posted this before - but it is no less true: My opinion - based on my experience: never trust the controller on a heater. Never! Spend the money to get a Ranco controller - you can get one for $80 plus shipping. Rancos are industrial strength and I have never heard of...

    John guest gate valve

The only thing I have found that comes close is a clamp screw from AES. I am using it on a softer tube than what you are probably using, but I think it would work: http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/product.detail/iid/2320/cid/2281

    Queen Conch sand stirring effectiveness?

I have had a queen for amost 2 years: it does not stir the sand. They also need alot of territory: most say you need at least 16 square feet of bottom area or the poor thing will starve. I have also had fighting conches, and again, no sand stirring.

    You know your addicted when:

and for the DIYers: The boss invited us out for dinner, and when we told the kids we were going out, their response was: "but dad, you never go to Home Depot on Thursdays"

    Majestic Angels

I have had 2 of them: one died in quarentine, and the other was so bagered by a yellow tang half its size that it died a month after I put it in the tank. If I ever get another one, it will be the first fish I put in the tank. I also think there are issues on how they are collected which could...

To remove sand bed or not?

The phosphate reactor only takes out inorganic phosphate, which, in an established tank, is usually about nil. The organic phosphate can only be removed (short of starting over) by removing (skimming) things out of the water that have absorbed/used the phosphate. As for the carbon - I think you...

To remove sand bed or not?

An alternative: This year I have battled several outbreaks of nucience algae - the worst was the dinoflaggellets. I went through all the usual procedures and had some progress, but my tank was not anywhere near to the level of appearance I wanted it. I offer the suggestion below - NOTE: it...

    Let's Talk About ~Algae Control~

A suggestion for consideration: I also had what was becoming a terminal cyana/dyno problem with a 2 year old DSB. I followed all the usual advice and could reduce the problem, but it never went away, and even the slightest deviaton from the routine brought it back with avengence. The problem -...

    200 G Plywood tank

Something to consider: in sealing a plywood tank, you are probably going to use fiberglass and/or epoxy. Although both will do the job initially, plywood is flexible (compared to, say, glass). Over the long haul, I have doubts you can reasonably expect the seal to hold. I currently have a large...

    Whats your worst Reef Experience??

The best made plans of mice and men . . . . Last fall I noticed the usual increase in heater related problems, so I decided to try and improve my setup. I have two external containers that are part of the system: a refugium and a sump. Since I believe that one of the major contributors to...
