I have an extra 10g tank sittin around collecting dust. would it be a good idea,or bad idea to turn it into some sort of sump/fuge?

A great idea!! It will cost you a bit more to get it setup to work together, but it will give you more space to keep equipment (like a skimmer, heaters etc) as well as increase your water volume which is good. The more water the more stable your system will be. Also, the return from the sump to the tank will be an added source of flow for the tank:)

you're all about the flow aren't you krish? if you had it your way, I'd be pushing 1,000gph through that thing!no seriously though, I'll prolly need some help with ideas on how to do this. I know absolutely nothing about it. i know it's another place for water to go and get filtered, that's about it.if anybody's good at sketching, I'd appreciate a visual aid :D

Give me a sec and I'll find you some pics of how my sumps were tied in. That should help better than a sketch. Be right back:)

Alright...Here's how I added a sump on to my standard 75gal I had. The acrylic box you see sitting on the top of the tank is a CPR overflow. They have many different types of overflows you can use, but this was the one I chose. This is how the water gets from the tank into the sump. So if you look good, the water enters the overflow through that little slot on the front and then it travels through that overflow and on the back of the overflow at the bottom, you can see a hose...That's how the water drains down to the sump.

Now...If you look on the left side of the sump, you can see the same hose attached to the first chamber of the sump. Some people just rest the hose in the sump, but I have mine attached to a bulkhead to make it look neat and hold it in place. The other pipe you see going in is just for the skimmer you see sitting on the platform to the left.

Now once the water gets into the sump, it travels through the sump and has to make it's way back into the tank by a return pump so if you look in the last chamber of the sump all the way to the right, you'll see a pump with a clear hose attached to it. That puts the water back into the tank through a nozzle you can make up with pvc pipe if you want or just buy one. The overflows are designed to handle only so much flow. The one I had on this tank, handled up to 800 gph so the pump I used put out 750gph. Whatever is pumped into the tank, will be returned at the same rate so no need to worry if your overflow handles 800gph and your pump only pushes 300 gph. All that means is that your overflow will only drain at a rate of 300gph. Let me know if that helps any:)

yeah, that's slightly complicated. maybe somebody here in my area would help me out. is it bad to add a sump after everything is setup and cycled? cause i don't think that's an option as of right now. btw, krish what's the gatorade bottle for lol?hi tech setup with a gatorade bottle oh yeah :D
does it catch the waste from the skimmer?(guess)

you have no idea how Krish is about flow!!!:p i agree, it will help with keeping the water more stable..you will have to buy an external overflow most likely...if you have any snails, i would get rid of them...you really don't want a hang-on overflow to get clogged..you will have a flood!!!
here is a start...

Not at all...You will really only be adding water so you can't screw up anything. If you were adding more rock in there like some people like todo, then it may cause a small cycle to occur from some die-off the rock may experience. You can add one in whenever though:)

Yup!! That's what it's there for. I don't use anything anyomre as I have the skimmer dialed in just right. If by chance the skimmer overflows, it will just drain back into the sump...No biggie though. I doubt it will ever happen:)

i've got a 30 layin around... i'm either gonna use it as my QT for my 75 or sump for my 10 ... it'll be a show 10 for sure :)
