20 Gallon Mixed Reef

Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

Almost had a disaster today. When I woke up this morning there was no power to the tank. The GFCI had tripped sometime overnight and the tank was 71 degrees. Corals were not looking too happy and neither were the fish. The strawberry basslet decided to jump out of the tank to see if it was warmer. It wasn't. I turned everything back on brought the temp back up. So far the basslet seems to be the only casualty although my devils hand leather is still looking PO'd.
Time will tell but I think I need to figure out a better way to power the system. The RKL and the DJ power strip are both plugged into the GFCI outlet. If the GFCI trips, no power to anything. Any suggestions?

Since this last incident, it looks like everything will pull through in the tank, although the Devil's hand leather is still looking PO'd without full polyp extension during the day. All polyps were out last night though so I am not too worried. Here are some updated pics I took today.

Picked up two firefish, a pink birdsnest frag and a monitpora confusa frag yesterday. Will post pics once everyone is settled in.

Well that settles it - I simply MUST do a road trip to Thunder Bay sometime. I'll bring the beer.. :heh:

GFCI is tough one. Try isolating the power heads and heaters on separate circuits with different gfci outlets. GFCI outlets need to be replaced ever so often because they eventually wear out. Do you have a ground probe(s) in there somewhere?

I do have a ground probe in the tank. I had an electrician in my house the other day (for an unrelated issue, but that is another story) and he gave me some ideas to help fix the problem.

Here are the promised pics of my new frags, courtesy of Reliable Reef in Thunder Bay.

The firefish are still being shy and staying in the rock but are coming out at feeding time for a snack.

After much deliberation and countless emails back and forth with Digital Aquatics, I decided to sell my ReefKeeper Lite. I was having issues with it randomly powering off/on ever since I upgraded to the 2.0 firmware. It was rock solid before that though, so I reset everything and wiped it clean. Hopefully the guy I sold it to (with full disclosure of issues and a good price) has better luck than I did.
I have purchased an Apex Lite from Neptune and got it set up. The programing was much harder to do than the Reefkeeper, but you can do so much more with the Apex. I haven't even come close to reaching the programming potential of this unit as I just wanted to get everything up and running first.
I am looking forward to fiddling around with this thing over the next few days and seeing what this thing can really do.

sorry bout the reefkeeper russter,

i recently had a similar issue with DA when my lcd screen went out only 1 year old. they had me buy a new head unit for $94 and they would refund me when i sent mine in to them so i could continue the temperature control it was providing despite the burned out screen. When i sent the burned out screen unit back to them they said "we found signs of salt water corrosion in the unit" and refunded $14(basically shipping cost of the one i bought to replace it). The unit has never been wet and other than maybe humidity i feel it was an out right lie and of course they wont send picture proof back to me of the damage. I was pissed they never mentioned there was even a chance of them doing that because we all know i could have bought a brand new unit for $20 more and would have got the pc4 and itemp. Needles to say i will be doing the same thing your doing in the future after that scam.

DA wanted me to take my whole system off-line and send it in to them (on my dime) so they could try to figure out what was wrong with it. Prior to that I had already sent in the NET module and a PC4 for repair (under warranty but I still had to pay for shipping from Canada).

Looks good to me and very clear!! I'd never imagine that was taken with an itouch!

BTW, Tank looks great!!!! :)
