Jason also bought a drill bit and watched a video on youtube last night. He feels prepared to drill our sump now. Should be entertaining....

remember GO SLOW and NO PRESSURE ..
LOTS OF WATER!!

what also might help is put some tape on the underside of the glass were your drilling this will help reduce the final 1/16th from chipping out as much.

Thanks Adam, hopefully the 9 years of working on cars will give him some help with drilling this thing. He knows how to be gentle and precise.
We went and bought 56 lbs of live rock tonight, and threw it in a tub. Which means we could setup the skimmer!!! Yeah!! Now we can have our SWC broken in by the time we are plumbed, and hopefully have plenty of cycled liverock ready too. I'm thinking I'd like a rock atoll type setup, with two islands on the outside with a small line of rock connecting them. I'd like a lot of open swimming space.
Jason also started a rear rock wall. We've always wanted to try this, so here goes! He has the eggcrate all cut out and ziptied together, with some smaller pieces of eggcrate in different areas sticking out like ledges. Curious to see how that works out.

Oh, and with our visits to the "fishie store," Peyton (3yrold) decided our tank needs a scooter blenny and a yellow tang. It's so cute when he gets involved with the tank. He can't wait for us to move our "co-wals" to the new "BIG" tank either. I love it. The five motnh old really digs the clownfish.

Wow, your set up is building up pretty fast! I like your plumbing idea. If you get a chance, can you post some photos of inside the overflow box? Also, which bulkheads did you go with? I'm new to this plumbing thing so I would appreciate any help I can get.

Hi, it's Dana. I just looked at the invoice, and Jason ordered a 1" bulkhead. We're fairly new to the plumbing in thing too. This will be our first drilled tank. Our other 'sumped' tank we had was a 46g with a 29g sump, and we had the cpr hob overflow, and an internal return pump. So not much plumbing to figure out.:D And I'll be honest, plumbing goes totally over my head so this is all Jason.
I'll see if I can get some photos of the overflow tomorrow!
And yes, this is going "fast" because of me... I tend to be a 'so if we get it today, can it be done by next weekend' kinda girl.
I know Jason is more than happy to share whatever the heck he's figured out so far, he likes to talk things out, usually at me with me blinking back.:D

Some close up pictures of the hood and how i built it! Came out really well, it's very sturdy and yet still light weight.

Alright, so for a 1 3/4" hole which this tank has 2 of in the overflow, you need a 1" bulkhead, the ones i got are "threaded" on the inside of the tank, and "slip" going out. If you can get bulkheads that are both end slip, would probably be better, but hindsight is always 20/20, i will just have to live with what ive got...it will work just fine though, just another fitting to deal with. so here are a couple pics so far, i dont have my standpipes built yet hough. I am planning on a durso drain, 1" and my return line is going to be 3/4" (same as the out let on my return pump.)

Hey Dana!

How is your build progress? Any update?
I am almost done with the canopy build....my project is taking forever!

Hi! It is going a little slower than I'd like, but Jason is working hard on it. We did our water test over the weekend and are leak free! It looks like the pump we got is a little too powerful though, so we are thinking we'll do return piping over the sides of the overflow and have them come to the bottom with the outlets pointing at the front glass, on both sides. Does that make sense? Get a little more head loss on there so the pump doesn't need to be throttled back.
Jason made a durso stand pipe with some sort of mod on it in the overflow, and a reverse durso for the outlet in the sump.
We are leaving Sunday to go camping for a week, so we haven't been pushing to get it done til we get back since we don't want it setup before we go.
Thats great you got the canopy built!! You are one step closer! It seems like some of the parts of these builds just stretch on forever. Back when we first talked about doing this, I figured three weekends, we'd be good to go. Ha!!

Jason tried making the back wall with eggcrate and foam; it totally didn't work out. He made z shaped type ones to go around the center overflow, but when the foam dried they shrunk up like crazy, and really did make a z shape, so they no longer fit around the overflow box. Fail.

Yeah, we had to scrap the eggcrate wall, with the center overflow it required too many corners. Instead we covered it in black vinyl. It looks fine, not as cool as the eggcrate wall, but oh well.

We did the rockscaping in the tank, and its now sitting cycling. We decided to keep this tank clean and ick/disease/parasite free, we would need to qt everything. So we have all of our live rock and corals sitting fallow, and our fish are in a tub in the garage.
We purchased two more fish prior to qt, so they can all do it together! We got a CR yellow tang and another ORA b&w clown!

So we went to test fit the light fixture into the hood, and....it was about a 1/2" to long, so i took the fixture apart, cut what i needed to cut off and put it bak together!! Voiala...fits like a charm!

So we went up to Barrier this last weekend and picked up 3 new bulbs for our light fixture. We didnt like how white and washed out the stock bulbs on the fixture made the tank look, so we got 2 Gieseman Actinic+, and 1 Aquablue+. Makes a much more blue look! Also, were not diggin the rockwork as it is now with the leaning wall look. Were planning on more of a 2 islands design with lots of open swimming area for fish. Gotta love rockscaping!!!
