i kinda know what it feels like only on a MUCH smaller scale. i think mine was caused by the same thing. i used some old declorinator and thought it smelled strong and different but figured it was just in my head. over the next day or so i lost everything. his tank was truly beautifull, a great mix of color and species of lps, sps, and others. get well soon tank and keeper!

it does something to someones soul to go through this. I lost everything but my fish when my 180g crashed. It's like you end up with post traumatic stress disorder. It was not near the status of Steve's tank but to each and everyone that has lost a tank it hurts down deep.

i just remember from my tank at the restaurant at one time,,leaked fitting at the return pump,,pump all the water from my sump+20% of the water from the main tank out to the restaurant floor about 55 gals,,,octopus3000 worked me up at 3am,,rush to the restaurant,,lucky i have 55gals ro already make up,,but cold

any way ,,some one advice to me to use tap water said it's ok????,,,to replaced/ro was too cold 65 degree need to heat it up,and won't even let me borrowing the ro water he had either, but i did not take that advice,,,lucky me ahh,, otherwise i willbe end up like steve...:D ,,no offen there just the true story.
sorry to hear what the tap water do to steve's tank

That is a terrible thing. It is pretty unfortunate that these things happen but they do. I am not 100% sure about this, but I think that once tap water is fully mixed with artificial salt mix any chlorine that was in there gets dissappated, and is not a threat to the tank. Anyway this is a valuable lesson for anyone out there to think things thru prior to acting on a disaster like this.

Another point here is that you should never allow your skimmer to drain directly to the sewer, it is a recipe for disaster.

If you read this Steve, I am very sorry to hear of your great loss, it breaks my heart.

Wow I love that tank. Sad day. I hope his fish will be ok. I know the coral is a huge loss. I think if anyone can comeback from a loss like this It would be SteveW

I'm sure he will be kicking himself for a long time over that mistake. I'd also guess he will be adding a failsafe before restocking.:)

Truly tragic. It's not like you can run over to the LFS and pick up 200 large colonies of SPS even if you have the bankroll. I'm sad for him, so I can't imagine how he feels.
