Long-story-short, I was spying on my peppermint shrimp (NOT eating the aptasia) with a flashlight last night--and I inadvertently spotted my bi-color and his face was all spotted!

Or maybe "splotchy" is a better word for it--he was sticking out of his hole--but it looked like someone had taken a tiny eraser and rubbed the color off of parts of his face!
(Actually he looked like he was wearing clown make-up!--white patches around his mouth, around his eyes, by his antennae, etc....)

IT TOTALLY FREAKED ME OUT!!!!
I even turned the MH bulbs back on--just to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me.

I know I've read that blennies sometimes fade colors based on stress,
and can change patterns for mating, etc....but this was a pretty drastic change, anyone else experienced this?!?

(BTW: When the lights came on this morning he was completely normal looking!):)

Yes many animals can look different under different lighting and especially at night. Coloration is part of their mating and camoflague repertoire.

My bi-color will turn into a one-color sometimes ...i will walk in and he looks normal, see him later and his is all black, then look at him even later, and he will be back to normall. I dont know, i dont think that blenny's are all there

Thanks everyone, I'm glad to know it's "normal"!

I just checked him tonight--and he's wearing his "clown-face" again...
but tonight I got to see his sides too, white-on-black zebra stripes!! very:cool:

My wife was about to start calling him "Lenny the Blenny"
but with this dual-coloring thing he's got going on--I may have to dig into some of my old comic books for a name...

"A Mild-mannered billionaire/reporter/freelance photographer by day, but when darkness falls--Lenny dons his costume to fight crime as the incredible Mr......!" (to be continued):p

This reminds me of the first time i purchased a saltwaterfish. A few years ago, i bought two yellow talbot damsels. I was on my way home got out of hte car and put it onto the kitchen table, a couple minutes later i looked in and they were dark grey! i was like omg they gave me the wrong fish.. haha i was so silly=) they were of course the correct fish and had just color shifted while they were freaked out. I bet i even color changed to a little redder skin tone when i got freaked out cause they were different colors cuase they had freaked out... if that last sentence made anysense=)
