It's been a while since I sold the 350g system. Almost 5 years. Kids are older now and been thinking about getting back into the hobby. What's new in the hobby since? I'm thinking of a 75-90g system should be a good size to start back up. What's the latest and greatest life support system now?

Welcome back.
Leds have come far and gotten cheaper. Seems no end in sight either.
DC powered pumps
wave pumps
bio pellet reactors
idk lots of new stuff.
-D

LEDs are working good, bit of a bigger hit on the wallet in the front end, but saves you $$ over time.

Sooooo nothing really new then lol. Maybe leds are a little more advanced? Should I just get led and not even bother with mh?

Hey pal, been a LOOG time. Yes, spend some time looking into LEDs, they are vastly superior to halides if only to cool running with no chillers.

WOW!! Blast from the past! Good to see you around again. Like most have said LED lighting is about the biggest change out there not much else has changed that drastically. You may also notice that the traffic to RF has slowed here. A lot of newbies are using FB as a means for communication now a days. There are still a few of us ole timers hanging around thou. Good to see ya!

+1..................

Thanks for the warm welcome ole friends. It's been a while hasn't it? Good to see some familiar names. I just want a simple and less demanding system for my lil ones. I noticed there are not too many local shops around any longer. Any good shops locally you guys can point me to? Thanks for the help guys. Uuugh I don't use FB

The ole reliable barrier reef is still around, and Oceans by Design which is in the south center area! As far as our neck of the woods there are only petco's and maybe aquarium paradise.

Nope you wanna go LED now. Less heat, no chiller and waayyy longer bulb life and about half the power use to boot!. No really new things but changes, most people don't use Calcium reactors now opting to just use a three part dosing system (mag, cal, alk with a dosing pump)

Everyone see the maxispect grye pumps?
D

I haven't! But I will look into them. I wanna new return pump but just haven't decided which one yet.

Just saw they aren't returns but flow pumps. Looks cool.

Wow long time no talk! Funny I'm in the same boat you're except kids are still young and I already started my 60 cube build lol. Great to hear you're thinking about getting back in! Check out Kessils for lighting. They're my favorite LEDs look better than halides with a natural sunlight shimmer and controllable. Also Maxspect came out with the gyre for flow. Looks promising and it's the only pump you would need up to 100 gallons or so. Cheaper than 3 vortechs :). I'll be looking for your build thread in the near future ;)

Roscoe, welcome back!!! I can vouch for the LED, I have my own DIY back in 2010, and still works today. I havent touch it ever since. Only issue right now, I have 2 blue bulbs out, but other than that, still works....

If you will be into softies! hook me up.
