I was tinkering around tonight with the tank getting some things in order because we're having guests over Friday (my gang's Christmas gathering). I was playing with the Portal viewer and decided to shoot a short video showing the difference it makes. Please excuse the messiness in the tank and concentrate on the "Portal Viewer"

Very cool. I've seen these for sale and didnt think they would add much to the tank...obviously I was wrong.

There is a wet side and a dry side, right? These are sorta algae magnets with a magnifying glass in the middle?

Nick it's a way cool "toy" and one that guests to my home enjoy. It's almost like sticking your head IN the tank to get a close view.

Yes wet side (with some degree of mild glass scraping) and Dry side which houses the actual magnifier. I can't tell you how much even my wife enjoys using this toy.

Way cool Al. Where did you find it?

I ordered it direct from the vendor at Innovative Viewing Systems.com but some LFS are starting to carry them in stock now. I had to wait a good while so if you find it locally you may be better off :)

IMHO it's well worth the money and is actually one of the COOLEST things I've added to my tank that guests who aren't "Reef Familiar" tend to really enjoy.

Very nice. I'll have to ask for one for Christmas. :) Thanks Al.

Yes by all means be "Good" and don't forget to show this thread to Santa.

estanoche yes it has some degree of "Magnification". I'm not sure how they did it to where you can see immediately in front of the "Portal" and all the way to the back of my tank (only about 20") all in focus and magnified. Now it's not so strong as you can see the pores in the fish's gills etc but it's a good amount to see micro-fauna and great detail of your coral. I suspect if you have some type of "infestation" (ie Red Bugs, Nudi etc) it would greatly help to identify them.

Cool Product! Outrageous Price! I can't belief they want $80. I could probably buy a magnifying glass, a small sheet of acrylic, pull out my dremel and recreate it for $15, and I dont have wholesale suppliers for either.

In the end I'm just jealous that I don't have one. LOL!

Oh I agree that it's costly for sure. It took me a day to two to convince myself to "just do it" because I hadn't seen one yet so I took a gamble. In hindsight I'm glad I did because ,at least for me, it's worth it. I can't stress how much FUN it is for me, my wife, and guests to our home.

Tonight I''ll be taking it for a serious "Test Run" because we're having a our group of friends over for a "Christmas/Dirty Santa" party. I suspect it will get lots of use tonight. :)

Don't get me wrong, if I could afford to spend $80 on right now I probably would cause I love watching the little critters in my system. Its just that I have this one thing stopping me... I call it a wife, lol, and she would flip if I spent that much money on another trinket for my tank.:yell:

very nice AL, oh love the background music in the video just in time for the party

Very cool idea. Kind of reminds me of when I'd break out the magnifying glass to look at things in the tanks. Maybe, just maybe if I had the extra $$ I would buy one of these. But then again I may be more inclinde to DIY one like Chikcneofthesea mentioned.

Cheers,
Alex
