Hey everyone. I was shopping around today & ended up at King's Discus in Downtown Seattle (China Town) & saw some of the most amazing colored soft corals/leathers. Not only did they have some of the prettiest Elegance Corals & gonaporas I have ever seen but they had toad stool leathers in bright yellow, orange & pink. I ended up getting one out of their display tank that was larger & is a really pretty orange/peach color. When I got home I did some research online & have not seen ANYWHERE that has them these colors (besides the bright yellow). Is it possible that these toadstools have been injected to make them these colors? The one I bought is really big and they have had it in that tank for over a year. The color is the same from head to stalk. I will try to take some pictures of it tomorrow when it opens back up all the way. Please give me any thoughts you may have...

Yep, dyed, as in Died in all possibility. The only "pretty" color of toadstool is the Steve Tyree Green Polyp Toadstool. Now so as to not hurt the feelings of any respectable hard working toadstools, I have many greenish, yellow, purplish toads and love each and every one.

I just stopped in to look at the place, yes the are artificially colored.

Some people get really upset about this
.
Its hard to get mad at him ,he is so nice laughing and talking ,what a nice guy.

His brother is much less personable.

Oh well crap, I paid $85 for a Dyed Toad Stool??? I feel so stupid! Does anyone have any experience with them & what will happen? Will it die? Will it live & just end up turning back to it's original color? It is a really nice big one, looked to be perfectly healthy... I will take pictures of it as soon as it gets happy & opens up, hopefully tomorrow...

I have seen toadstools in all different colors. That doesn't automatically mean it has been dyed. I have lots of them that are a brilliant green with white polyps (not the tyree green polyp toadstool, opposite colors). If it seems to be healthy, and you like the color, I would say it was a pretty good buy. After it's acclimated, frag a few pieces and see if they retain the color as they grow. If you do indeed have a unique color, I would like a piece someday! They would be great for selling or trading. Can't wait to see the pics and hear more about it. I've never even heard of dying corals until now!

Thanks! I feel better for now. I have to wait until it opens back up & is happy (it is closed up like a fist right now). I got a toadstool at the Barrier Reef Sale that took 2 weeks to "get happy". Hopefully this one one take quite as long... as soon as it does I will take some pics and put them on here.

Can't wait for the pics!! :D

Just because it was dyed, doesn't guarantee death. It will need proper care of good water, good circulation and flow, and decent lighting. Think of it as having made a gray/brown leather coral purchase, and awaiting it's final color. On a side note, if Rob of Red C Aquariums says they are dyed, I would put money on it...

Still waiting for it to get happy and polyp up all the way so I can get a good pic. It started to open up yesterday and then one of my turbos came and knocked it into the sand and it shriveled up like a fist again. This morning it looks happy in it's new spot & starting to open again. Will post as soon as it opens all the way...

Finally a couple of pictures of my colored toadstool leather... let me know what you think!

That looks like a pretty natural color to me. Not as spectacular as I imagined it to be, but a good looking coral nevertheless.

Thats the color it was when I got it... kinda peach/orange. It does not look as bright with the picture my cell phone took but it is really pretty. I'm really hoping it is not dyed! I would love for it to be healthy & stay this color even after fragging!
