Well, I need some advice. I'm planning on purchasing a new digital camera in the next month...I hope. I will be getting an SLR camera. I currently have a Kodak Z760. It's met my needs so far, but I want something better. I stopped by a camera shop in a large mall yesterday to get some ideas. I've always pretty much thought I would get a Cannon Rebel. In doing some research, I now see that there's more than 1 model of Rebel...lol. I also looked at a Nikon, but I don't remember the model number. It was 40something. They salesperson was telling me about "image stabilization," "shutter lag," and all kinds of other things I didn't understand...lol. From what she was saying, the Nikon was every bit as good as the Rebel. I did explain to her that a lot of my pictures were going to be of aquariums (through glass). From what I learned, it looks like I'm going to need to spend between $700.00-$900.00. YIKES...LOL.
I have no idea what I should be asking these sales people. I have no idea what accessories I need to be looking for. Lenses, filters....I'm clueless. I need some good advice!! HELP
Also, I'm a little leary of buying something this expensive off of Ebay, sight unseen. Any suggestions regarding that?

my entire set up is about $900 i think, nikon d50 with tamron 90mm macro lens, given the lens isn't on sale anymore $90 rebate, though a similar lens is the 105mm sigma which seemed to have little differences in terms of quality and price, though the warrenty's a bit shorter, i've really liked my nikon, though i think the d50 has less mega pixels then the rebel xti 6 to 8 i think, ya i think the d40 is supposed to be good, seems that it's replaced the d50 for reasons i'm not sure, but i see it a lot more often than the d50

o just a thought too, i was just looking at the rc totm and one of the photographers used the rebel xt with the sigma 105mm macro lens, and the shots there are pretty good

Just info from a photographers wife:
shudder lag is bad
you probably want to see through the lens
mirrors are good
your camera is only as good as the lens you put on it.

Hope this helps.

I agree with all these comments! Lag is the time between pushing the button and the shutter opening. Any moving subject will drive you crazy if you have much lag. DSLRs in general have very little lag. P&S camera lag will vary greatly.

Through the lens is very nice... WYSIWYG for the most part. This is especially nice when shooting macros.

Lens quality makes a huge difference. Unfortunately it usually boils down to $$$ when buying quality lenses. You can save some money by buying third party lenses such as sigma, tamron, etc that are designed to mate with nikon, canon, etc. These lenses are not quite as good as the camera maker lenses but for most people will be more than adequate. But buy a good lens for macro. I don't think there is such a thing as a cheap good macro.

I just got

I just got a Canon Rebel Xti EOS 400 d and i couldn't be happier.Best Buy is running a deal on them where you can pick one up for 900 or so and pay for it over 18 months,at zero interest.Soon as i can figure out how to download pictures i'll show you just how good of pictures i was taking by day 2.

I have just come across a site (http://www.smartratings.com/photography/digital_cameras) that has a wide variety of selections of digital cameras. Each camera has its own user and expert reviews compiled. It would be a good idea to get to the location and read these reviews so you can get as much information as to the camera of your interest. Good luck.

Dude, call me and we can talk cameras, if you want. Ill have my photography website up soon. Gonna start selling my pics.
Ive been researching digital SLR's alot lately so I could help steer you in the right direction. To much info to type though! :D

rocket, maybe you should add some posts onto the photoworkshop that is in that forum or perhaps start a new one since the last post in that one was over a year ago almost a year and a half now, then we all can read, i've gotten a lot of good tips from the people here and it's made my photos tons better

i dont' think bhphoto is the cheapest place out there, i know at least for my lens it was cheaper at sigma4less and there were places even cheaper than that too, don't remember all the sites though

The best place IMO in Spokane is Huppins. They match any internet price then you get "real" help and somewhere to take stuff back if needed. thats where I would go over any internet site. They do have a website
check it out.

a good review site is slrgear.com has a lot of reviews for lenses and mounts
how much were you looking at spending, u mentioned $700-900 in your first post, but the d50 at least is cheaper than that i know, i'd have to check the xTi and such

Sid,

I got a brand new Canon Rebel XTi with 18-55mm lens and a 4GB Kingston card for $750.00 on eBay last Xmas. I could be more happier with it.

all of the pics for my new 375 gallon tank were taken by this camera.
