i need 2 good fans to put in my canopy...what is a good brand??? i'm thinking 3-4" fans

Depends on how much you want to spend:p They have some really cool fans that I think are temperature controlled that speed them up when the temperature rises etc, but cost a pretty penny. Or...You can just use something similar to the fans that radio shack sells as well and buy a power converter. That's basically what I did except mine are fully plastic. Probably the quickest and easiest way to go about it. I know a few members here know of some cool places to get fans that have a good cfm rating as well as aren't too loud, so hopefuully they'll chime in:)

I am big on the Vantec Stealth fans. They are one of the quietest fans out there.
I have used the radio shack fans on bought some off of ebay, but I generally got tired of the noise.
So now it's 12v Stealth fans only.

does that fan have a power cord, Finn ??? i am no electrician, that's for sure...ALSO,are the icecap fans loud??? i want 2 fans in my canopy

The IceCap fans are loud.IMO. Many people don't share that opinion.
You have to go to radio shack and get a small power supply. It is very easy. Only two wires.

i just read some reviews about the icecap version..some said it was really loud, and then some said it was hardly noticable:confused:

Well the easiest way to determine that is to look at the decibel ratings of the fans.
I think the people that said they weren't loud must have really loud pumps.lol :)

I have to admit that the varable speed fan the goes faster as the heat builds up, has everything wired up is an attractive idea, but I'm just tired of all the noise related to our reef tanks. So I'm into looking at equipment that runs quieter, even if I have to do a little work with it.
I guess cost would be an issue. $40 for the IceCaps and $12 or so for the Stealth fans.

i don't think they have one of those stores here..there is Office Depot..i will look online and see if i can find one at one of those stores

if you go diy, just go get a replacement transformer for anything that uses the same dcv, like my fan runs 12v so I just used a power plug from my car massage chair. chop the end off and solder/shrink the wires. works like a charm! you can even put a switch in. all very simple.

as in a wall wort? How do you know which one will work?

Chuck F. had "U.S. Toyo" on his tank and I went and ordered them from an outfit in CA. They are excellent and I have 2 sizes that i have really been using pretty much 24 hrs/day. They were about $40 but very worth it. Hope that helps
