what do you guys rinse your carbon in??? a bowl??? how do you get all the dust off??

I use a media bag that is used for carbon in some applications. You can usually find them hanging around next to the carbon at your local Pets Mart... Pretty cheap.

I always rinse my carbon in old tank water when doing a water change in the media bag I use to hold it in the tank:).

I soak mine in RO water get all the floaties out then stir it, Drain in a medium sized strainer, then put in the reactor. It eliminates any from entering he tank.

Good tip on the floaties, Bob. I also heard that soaking it in RO water supposedly draws out some of the phosphate in the carbon as well.

exactly my method as well

Whatever you rinse it in, make sure the water is dechlorinated or else the chlorine will use up some of the carbon's effectiveness. Okay, I know the sentence is awkward to say the least, but I am tired and you get the idea... :)

RO is the safest by any means. Old water from a water change maybe ok, but if there is something in the water like for whatever reason something bad then it can leach onto Carbon , At least thats my feeling, RO you have no worries with, Its clean will rid dust and all the floaties. Its just what I have done for 15 years.

cool...thanks guys...i think i will get a strainer and a carbon bag and see which i like the best!!!

ya'll just be careful with the strainers, that is where I got the metal in my sps tank and had a devil of a time getting it out. I was using a strainer for rinsing my fish food after soakin it in garlic. Same difference so just be careful.

Rob, thats one lesson I'll never forget. Learned the hard way, although I only lost 1 piece, for me thats 1 piece too many.

Old tank water isn't a good idea!
lets see if I can dig up my phosphate / carbon reactor:
It works well:D I do rinse in ro always though!
