Really??!!! I would have thought that with the lids off there would be more evaporation, more jumpers and my snails would get out?

more evaporation equals cooler tank, just plane ol science, snails will stay in & jumpers can happen but there are ways to prevent this. I used egg crate about 2" strip across the front and back that would leave all of the center open allowing all of the lighting in & evap. out.
 
Snails will crawl out of the water a little bit, but not out of the tank. Your rock might be cured, or at least partially cured. If that's the case your ammonia and nitrites will remain zero until you add some biomass (livestock). Once that happens you find out whether it's just cured or actually cycled.

Yep keep those covers off.They keep heat in, cut light penatration, and just get ugly with salt spray LOL. The evapartion is what is cooling the tank, and what the fans are meant to do, create evaporation...
