Hey Krish, I've been reading your posts for a few months now... watching your tank (err... LR curing bin) mature and go through all the motions. I think I've figured out what would help your tank the most.

Prozac. :)

Get some freakin' corals in there, already! As soon as you start adding more life, your tank's entire chemistry and bioload is going to shift. Each coral will change (minutely) your requirements, as will any fish, inverts, etc. As the tank matures, its very needs are going to change, even as they are doing right now. Certain microfauna "wax and wain" over time, adjusting to the surpluses of their necessary nutrients.

Maybe it's like ich.. it's always present in your tank, but it takes the right conditions to make it come out? A friend has had a tank for over 10 years, and this month, he had a single little ball of valonia show up right on the very tip of his Durso tube, which is covered and in the dark. Not only that, but his tank has never had valonia in it in those ten years, nor has he added A SINGLE thing to his tank in several months. Where'd the valonia come from? Who knows. His tank is absolutely gorgeous, and he's even had it featured as one of another board's Tank of the Months, so you can trust his maintenance is top notch.

If not Prozac, maybe Xanax, or some other sedative. :D

There are actually are some species of Valonia that are banana shaped. But there are also others which are not Valonia......... Caulerpa raceosa, var. lamourouxii/lamoureux ( pics only in books)...... Boergesenia forbesii ( old name Valonia forbesii but it is now known it is not a Valonia, which might be yours :D ).....and Bornetelle. You should try for a close up where the image is sharp and detailed. Is your branched at all, then automatic Valonia sp

Krish, I have that same stuff growing in mine, it doesn't resemble any of the google images Willy posted. It is more of a hairy grass w/silvery blue hairs mixed in, it is really easy to pull off because it grows in a mound. We got our MH's about the same time and this stuff didn't start growing in mine until then. I'd still like to know what it is

Thanks for the replies Sherman, Boomer and Mike!:) I will see if I can get a closeup later on today when the lights cut on. I did change to MH's as well recently so maybe that was the extra "ingredient" it needed to grow...

LOL Sherman!...You may find this funny, a shock or strange, but believe it or not, you guys living in the US have it A LOT better than I do when it comes to corals or marine life. I would have had corals in my tank long time if it were that easy for me, but it really is not that easy. I'm not allowed to import any marine life into the Bahamas. If I'm caught, then that can result in a heavy fine or if they feel like being stink about it, could result in possible jail time. The 3 fish I have in my tank that came from the US was only made possible because it came in with my friend's LFS freshwater fish order and they weren't invoiced. With fish, they aren't going to notice anything "odd" if they looked through the bags, but with corals, it would be noticed right away. Then you have the reefs. Catching fish is no biggie, but then when it comes to corals, it is illegal to break any off. I know I can probably get away with it without anyone noticing, but I won't feel all that comfortable about hacking a reef and then there is still the possibilty that suppose I do get caught one day? So that leaves me with very limited options like...

(1) Would be to wait for a frag to be naturally broken off of a reef and harvest it. (which is a gamble and leaves you with no promises)

(2) Would be to maybe learn how to frag off of a reef to just take a small portion of a coral, but leaving the coral attached to the reef intact

or

(3) Hope that an American/foreigner is coming into town that wouldn't mind bringing it their bag because they never check tourists bags coming into the country.

So there you basically have it. I know people are always teasing me here about getting corals and stuff (which doesn't bother me) but really, isn't as easy as everyone may think for me. I was offered frags from members here that they wanted to send to me and I just pay the shipping etc, that I had to turn down because I'd get in trouble if I were to bring it in. So, It is going to take some time (probably a very long time) for me to have a tank with nice corals in it like you guys with my limited options. That is basically why I've always been seen having only FOWLR setups. :)

So if you ship it in, it's illegal.
If someone smuggles it in, it's illegal.
If you take it from your ocean, it's illegal.

Just to clear the confusion, is there any legal way (cost aside) of acquiring corals for you?

Sorry to say, but not really unless I find something already broken off of a reef:doubt: The Bahamas is slack, but I'm not a person who is all that interested in breaking laws anyway regardless, so yeah, I'm very limited and kind of screwed...

I thought it resembled a type of turf algae. Krish, are the other tufts of algae similar or different than what's growing on the underside of that rock? Does the algae feel tough/wirey at all? If at all possible try and get a good shot of the algae details. The book I have on algae, has photos of Bornetella sp. (like Boomer put a pic of), and they have a honeycomb appearance to their surface. Is the surface of this algae pretty smooth, see-through, any descriptive characteristcs??

Nikki, I have that same algae and it is indeed wirey/tough but it pulls off very easy in clumps, just like a weed in your flower bed.

krmnal1 - I also had the same as you are describing. When plucked, it stayed in a "tuft" form and is very tough/wirey....provided it was pulled out in the early stages. As it stayed on the rock it became more and more difficult to pull off. The long spined urchin I had would eat it.

My lights cut on in a few minutes so I will try and get a closer pic then. I haven't touched it yet, but it looks pretty smooth and firm in the sense that it won't move with the flow. I'll get that closeup though in a few:)
