Coincadence? Also an ID

Ok...Try and stay with me on this one because it may get a bit confusing :confused: Some of you may remember when I had this rock in my tank with this brown algae on it which I thought was a sponge in the first picture here...

I contemplated removing it from my tank because everything was going well and I wondered if this "algae" was helping me, by using up excess nutrients in my tank. Anyways, I just decided to remove the rock totally from my tank and then, I'm not sure if it was a coincadence or what, but then after a few weeks, this appeared which some of you may remember as well...

OK! Now not long after that, I noticed my rocks began to look a little different in some places. No biggie...Then I saw a little green. No biggie again... I kinda liked the look of having more color in my tank especially since it wasn't the dreaded hair algae or cyno. Anyways, here's what is growing on one of my rocks and in very small spots in other places in the tank. (The sworded looking green thing on the bottom of the rock)

Anyone know what the heck this is now? Also, I'm wondering if it is a coincadence that I'm getting all these new growths in my tank since I removed that rock or it was something that was going to happen regardless... I haven't added anything new in to the tank in months! :confused: Any feedback would be greatly appreciated:)








 
Hey Krish, I too have that. I always thought it was another type of bubble algae but instead looks like a group of bananas.
Oh it is an algae though.

Yeah...I figured it was an algae because it was green, but hopefully it is just a bunch of un-ripened bananas and will eventually turn yellow:p I'm curious to know what type it is and if it is a nuicance! Hopefully someone will know...:)
 
I have that too. I wouldn't mind knowing what my Lawnmower is eating

LOL...Well my tang doesn't seen to like it and that fellow is a pig! :eek:

Yeah, I guess that is how it will be with algae like Paul mentioned before (PaulB) that you would have cycles of algae over the course of time where they will come and go. I personally don't mind the look of this one like I hate hair algae, but it would be good to know.
 
Actually looks pretty cool. Enjoy it. Might taste good with Vanilla ice cream, but I'm not going to try.
 
I would do a couple of quick tests. Check if its easy to remove from the rock without bursting the bananas. Moniter how rapidly it grows.

If it's a slow grower, and its easy to remove, I wouldn't worry about it. If its a very rapid grower, or its really difficult to remove, I would deal with it while its still small rather than later when its spreading places you dont want it.

Thanks Luke. Where the rock sits would be a pain to get to without causing a problem in there or possibly popping it if it can pop. Nevertheless, it is out front in my tank so I can monitor how rapidly it grows by just looking in. I'm hoping someone here will be able to ID it and say whether or not I should remove it. So we'll see what happens. I really don't want to mess with it just yet incase it may not be a wise thing to do seeing no-one has ID'd it yet:)
 
This algae is HARD to remove without breaking it.
But like I said in my tank it comes and goes. I do run a constant low in phos. but zeros across the rest of the board.
Depending on your tank habbits I bet it will subside.
 
It is not Razor for sure. It does look like valonia (bubble aglea). It can be problematic for sure but emerald crabs seem to be a pretty good countermeasure. You could get one and give it a shot. I had a bad outbreak of valonia last year and am now completely rid of it simply by manually removing what I could w/ a siphon hose and adding a emerald. Anyway algea is just part of reefing, it is unavoidable so don't be discuraged. Have you gotten any chaeto for your fuge yet?

Thanks for the reply Tom and no, I haven't gotten any chaeto yet. I think I may get some really soon though. So bubble algae eventually stretches out like swords then? It would make sense seeing I found that one big bubble in there and I think it was Scooter that was convinced if I saw one there may have been more...
 
Yea it isn't razor but like Tom said algae is part of reefing & actually we need it to some degree.
 
LOL...It looks kinda similar Scott. Where it is so small it is hard to say now though...Atleast for me. I guess I will have to wait to see how it looks when it grows out if it does. Hopefully I won't have that "luxury" and it will go away:p I've already made up my mind that I won't get frustrated like my first ever saltwater experience and take everything down. I'm prepared to take it as it comes. I also already have it made up in my mind that there is nothing more I can do really to take care of my tank anymore than I am already so no worries...:)
