I am setting up a 300 gallon (60/48/24) and have a local reefer who is getting rid of 2 400 ebalast (4 months old) made by coral vue. I am getting many conflicting stories that this is a bad company and they do not stand behind their products and will not warranty most things. I am also hearing that they have a high failure rate. Please advise!!

Hey, Mike -

I have two new CoralVue (CV) 175W ballasts driving CV 14000K bulbs. I haven't used them enough to comment on reliability, but I can share these observations:

1) Despite both bulbs being marked 14000K, one is definitely blue, the other crisp white; marginal quality control, IMO.

2) I called the company with a couple of ballast-related questions (voicemail - no one live) -- no (0) response.

So - QC is marginal, and they won't talk to you. That seals it for me for future purchases.

Steve,
Make sure that the nipple on the inner envelope of the bulb that is burning blue is pointed in the same direction as the other bulb (up is best, down is bad).

HTH,
Kevin
I have sold many Coralvue bulbs and ballasts without any more trouble than PFO, CSL, or Currents.

On another note, when you buy from a local dealer they should stand behind the products they carry. In my store you can walk in and exchange the product for one that is working and the store deals with getting it repaired or replaced.

Regards,
Kevin

Kevin,

You happen to have EXCEPTIONAL customer service! *Smile* Definitely NOT the norm, when it comes to LFS.

I am buying these from a local reefer (the new style ballast) so I would not get a warranty with them. this is what has me more worried.
