Crazy blue zoo prices

Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

Tubs is no different than Aquascene , ATL, ORA or Tyree LE corals he is an old school collector that has been in the reef business for a while. I forgot his actual name but I think I have a link to his site on my computer at home (I will post the link up when I get home) where he sales his LE Tubs corals. So The Tubbs Blue zoa is from his original colony.

Anyone willing to shell out $25 a polyp is loco. They will be $1 per polyp within a year or two. I'll wait until the price comes down or alternatives become available.

Tubb's Blues are currently going for about $10-12 per polyp. They've been available for several years, and the price has dropped, but they've "held their value" quite well. $25.00 per polyp wouldn't even begin to get you some of the nice Zoanthids that are on the market right now. To some people, it might sound "loco," but to others, who are into Zoanthids, it's worth spending the money. Some even look at it as an investment. I, for one, have bought colonies of Zoanthids, at a very reasonable price, and then been able to quickly recoup my "investment" by selling off a couple of frags of them.

Kinda look like these i have. 20bux for the frag. Its been growing nicely, pry 15 new polyps in the last 4mths or so. 25bux a polyp is rediculous imo, wouldn't pay that for any zoa.

I'd definitely be suspicious, but regardless if you got something that resembles them for that price.. I'd still love'em :)

So the real "trick" is to pick something that is proven as a quality coral, then name it something slick like "apple of my alien eye chalice" or "tickle me Elmo tort", then market it to the worshipping masses at higher prices than the original chalice or tort would then command. Better yet, use liberal digital touchup to enhance the colors beyond what the already beautiful corals achieve. Make it seem like only a scarce few frags of the untouchable are ever to be entrusted to the heathen and leverage the "please sir" worship to sell other items.
Brilliant marketing!

The only missing step is to figure out how to castigate anyone who "calls out" this business plan as less than ethical.....haven't got that part figured out yet ;}

For the record- I am not referring to Steve T, John S, etc. Good guys both!

Sounds just like the muscle car market, everything is a 1 of 1 or rare,

LOL Danno, but you've forgotten one key word. You'll find it all over ebay, when looking at corals. "RARE!!!" It would seem ALL the corals found on ebay are rare or even "One of a kind!!"

Can I get on the waiting list for the "tickle me Elmo tort"?:badgrin:

i was orignally going to say 25per poloyp get real.. but
for 1 the coral has been in captivity, grown in to the frag and does ship well and is available to demand but zoas grow in huge fields
i would say every coral in my 3 tanks is a wild caught speicmen but i have fraged certain sps and they have done well in other peoples tanks so when does it become aquacultered? when can i really give it a name i can get yellow poccis on every dive i can get blue palys on every dive blue stags everywhere but red cynarieas..not so much but aquacultering this kind of coral is quiet slow i mean w/c ones are already expensive an aquacultered one would be 3 times as much
back to 25 a polyop this is quiet alot but when you think this guy has to run all these tanks pay all the cost involved and has all these nice coloured corals so i guess you have to pay the price or be like this lucky dude who got these nice zoas at a reasonable price they may not be "tubbs" but their still some of the finest zoa in the ocean

To me I don't mind paying a higher price for corals that is proven for their health, color and growth plus I myself get more satisfaction when I am able to grow a 1/2'' frag to a colony. I think we also need to take into consideration the location we are in. A coral might be rare in one area but then again that same coral in another part of the country is as common as lawn grass! There are quite a bit of reefers in our area too. Alot of us like to collect I wouldn't say rare more like "hard to get a hold of" corals so thus some of the "harder to get corals" are more easily accessable in our area. On the other hand those that don't agree with the higher priced "hard to get corals" are driving $50-$60k cars and have a 3000=sf. home (not talking about anyone in particular). This hobby is also a business for some and just like every business you have to have creative marketing. To question a business or persons ethics is just wrong to me. What qualifies someone to judge someone elses ethics? Keep in mind would you deem ethical is business to others. If questioning ethics then well take a look around us!

i to agree with the satisfaction of growing a coral form quiet small to display size

I just got back from getting one of the 2 last rocks with these really cool zoas. Whether they are or are Tubbs I don't know but they sure do LOOK like them. Seem to be pretty happy.

I do think that if a company has unethical business practices, there's nothing wrong with that being made public. It's no different than praising a company that has exceptional business ethics. We praise the good companies all the time.....

Now, even though this thread was started about a particular zoanthid, since it's in the General Forum and about Crazy Blue Zoo Prices, as the title says....here we go.
