Dead Acro????

i found a huge acro at my lfs today..it is white with brown tips...i traded several frags for it, so i got it for free...now that i have been looking at it, i wonder if it wasn't supposed to be white...the girl said it got hung up for a day because of the weather.. is there a way to tell, if it is dead..it does have the stringy mucous coming out of some of the tips..i know my others do this..does that mean it could be alive still....also,the water it was in stunk soooooooo bad..it was nasty smelling

well i just got my replacement corl from my lfs..it appears to be an acro milli..i will get some pics after i acclimate it

i found an acro crab in it!!!
edit.....i just found 2 more crabs....the first one i found is not an acro..it is very fuzzy..i'm not sure what type it is..the other 2 are definately acro crabs!!!!!! also, it is definately a milli colony!! i was wanting a few of these..the girl at my lfs doesn't know the names of any corals...she just orders stuff..

Agreed! If you cant get it out without damaging the colony just stab it with a needle or something. Its fine to leave it there dead.

i figured that..i can try to get it..it blends VERY well with the coral..the thing is very camoflauged ..if i leave it there dead, maybe the other crabs will get a good meal:badgrin:

well i killed it..i stabbed it with a needle..it ended up cutting it in half..i hope it really was bad:doubt: ....here is a pic of the colony as well..it will remain in qt for a few weeks

Before you kill it, make sure it is not one of those very rare and valuable orange fuzzy crabs selling for $200+ each on ebay.

now why did you kill the crab dood...you should have put it in your sump or have a nano with crabs .

What lighting do you have over the qt tank now?? If it's still the pc's then you may have some problems keeping this coral til it does come out of qt. Acropora don't do as well as montipora under lesser lighting.. The bandit looking acro crabs are fine as are purple acro crabs. Any with blue eyes or hairy legs are a no-no.

i have the pc's over my qt tank right now..i will have my VHO's on it as soon as this #$@% sends me my ballasts....they didn't arrive today either!!!!!

Ron, I don't think vho's are gonna hold this coral either til it goes into the main tank. Acropora have got to have that intense lighting to thrive. Especially anything bigger than a frag and this piece is.

i kept the other 2 acro's that i have under the pc's for about a month..i know it isn't good for them , but i don't have any other lighting...the VHO's will at least be better than the pc's were..i have all of my sps under the VHO's in my display..they have actually grown since i put them in there..i hope the VHO's can keep my qt tank corals..i don't have anything more intense

VHO was the way to keep "SPS" corals back in the day, the colony will be fine in the QT for a couple of weeks with those. BTW nice looking colony you got there Ron.

thank you..i can't tell what color they are..i am a bit colorblind..they look greenish to me, but Kimmy always tells me i am wrong..i will have to get her to look at them..i am sure they will change color after they are under the MH's
