Recently, I started a thread called Red Acro Bugs - Inevitable? I was curious to see if all the frag trades going on would lead to SPS keepers getting them at some point in their tank's life. I am now wondering how prevelent they really are, so thought I'd post a poll.

If you keep Acros, do you have or have you had Red Acro Bugs?

Hi Tony, if you click on the link posted above, you will get some good information about them. There are other links in that thread.

Here is a picture of these little guys on an Acro frag:

I got them on a frag and the frag never actually did very well in my tank and ended up dying. Not quite sure how much of a part that the red bugs played in its death but might have contributed. I have never had any other acros with red bugs to speak of.

Okay, I voted "never had them" but I don't know if I'd notice - the creatures are awful small! I only have one or two small frags, and they just seem to go happily along.

I have them and voted so.
I did a treatment and thought just one dose was enough.
Well they're back! Things have been hectic around here for me but I will start treating again this weekend. I'm off for a few weeks so I can dedicate more time to ridding my system of them.
For those who don't have them good for you and stay vigilant.
For those who don't know about them start reading up on em.
For those with them...
I know your pain and the treatment works. Just be sure to do a strong treatment or multiple doses like recommended.

I have read about them for awhile and checked my tank regularly, never found any. Then I got two frags with them, one was really covered and not doing well. That was the fist time I had ever actually seen them in person. I noticed this while I was acclimating them before they were in my tank. I did not know what I was going to do with the frags so I checked my tank and sure enough they were in there as well.
I have always given frags a good looking over and never found anything. In my tank they are only on certain corals the populations seem to fluctuate over time. Right now I have a really hard time finding them, but eventually I will find one. When I fist saw them in my tank I could easily spot them crawling across my Nana. They are extremely small to see with the naked eye but I find that they are easier to spot on yellow corals.
Now I am just waiting to see any detrimental effects. I don't perceive any loss of color or slowed growth.

Sharks, how did the follow-up treatments go?

Anyone with red bugs use UV or Ozone on their tanks?

Here's another photo of acropora red bugs. Appears to inhabit one acro frag of mine, leaving my milles and slimer alone.

wow - great picture Elmo. I have a few bugs on my Green Acro but that is about it. I only count about 6 or 7 though. They don't quite look like yours though.... mine are a little smaller and not quite so red. I'm assuming they are still the red bugs though. too bad my digital camera can't zoom in that close to get a clear shot.

I had never heard of them until yesterday when I had finally had time to sit down and look at some threads on RC and went to the one on red bugs. So I got my loupe out [ I'm a clock maker] andpulled some of my acros out and sure enough I have them, and like someone on the thread said they seem to like the blue ones the best. I have had two different blue colored acros die off in the last 6 months and even before reading the thread was wondering why the blue ones were dying? I can see them now on my big green acro too, but it seems to be okay so far, I think because it is so big and the blue ones were frags. I have some purples and other green ones and they have them too. I checked the pinks and the lighter colored ones and couldn't see any.

As I read on their was mention of different kinds maybe some being bad and others not being harmful, well guess I'm not living right because I seem to have the bad ones. I have a ton of flow and my perims are great so I don't agree with AC that it could be a matter of husbandry. I do agree with him that a QT is a very nessassary thing and I had one for my fish when I set up my two tanks years ago, but sold it when I got the fish in my tanks I wanted. I well for sure get one going again before I get anymore SPS.

Now I am not sure what coarse of action to take but I am going to monitor the situation and go from there. Atleast I am quite sure of what is happening and well keep a close eye on it, haven't decided if I well treat or not since I have alot of life on my liverock that I don't wish to kill off.

Nikki do you have a link to the article using some heartworm medication?, I would like to take a look at it. I was thinking of setting up a QT tank as a treatment tank instead of treating the main tank. Thanks

Well I got Reinfected after my first batch of Treatments... I have Treated the tank again Starting today... So far everything is ok and I plan on it staying that way... Its a rather Harmless treatment... I am about 3hrs of the 6 into it... Its nothing to Sweat.. I will tell ya the Polyp Extention is Unreal... Since treating the fist time 6 months ago or so my Corals have colored up so well...

did you loose anything in your tank? did it effect your pod population or anything?

my worry is I have a mandarin and I don't want to kill off the entire pod population.

I havent lost anything except on the 3rd treatment last time I overdosed and Lost one Fire Shrimp and Lost my Acro Crabs the 1st time I treated... So far today my 5 Cleaner shrimps are hanging in there and Everything seems to be doing great... I will post a few pics from the tank as Of right now in a few mins..
