I have a 75 gallon tank that is filled with 145 lbs of live rock from top to bottom and side to side...Using the tank calculater found here ,it calculates that I have about 68 gallon of water after displacement,So would it be a fair assumptiom givin to wattage of my t5 unit (432 watts) that I would have near 6.3 watts per gallon "if" that were the rule of thumb... The reason I ask is I still have bleaching on top of my rock and Im wondering if the light is to intense and should I raise the light a little. Now its sitting five inches from the top of the tank. By the way it a Nova extreme 8 light x 54 watt light unit.

You have bleaching on the LR or the corals are bleaching? The rules for lighting are pretty fuzzy IMO because they dont take the tank dimensions into consideration.

No not on the corals just on top of the exposed rock. If the rock is shaded at all coralline grows well but not where it gets the most light.

Sorry there, I dont have any experience with rocks bleaching. Hopefully someone else can chime in and give ya some feedback. Good luck.

Different species of coralline have different tolerance for high lighting. In a high wattage reef tank, it's common to lose the greens, the oranges, and the dark maroon species. In those tanks, pink and purple tend to eventually become the dominant species.

Yes, lighting will affect the color of coraline and can cause bleaching of a certain color if the intensity changes. Happens all the time to people when they upgrade their lighting.

Its nothing to worry about. I didnt have coraline on my rock tops for over two years. IN fact, my display didnt have much coraline at all, yet my reef was beautiful and thriving. You have to ask yourself. Am I trying to grow coraline algea or corals?

Everything is beautiful and thriving, but the top of the rock looks out of place with the rest of the tank.
