i will not be using any filters or poypads in my new tank...i would like to have something to catch some debris before it hits my sump..where would i place the filter sock and how could i install it?????

On my new tank I have it setup so that the overflow comes down and into the filter sock. I just have the filter sock tied to the overflow drain and it works perfectly. I also have the drain on my skimmer going into a filter sock.

They have different sizes of filter socks. Some have rings in them and some have strings so you can tie them on. I went with the ring that is about 4" wide and overall the filter sock is 12" long.

so it is at the bottom of your drain pipe where it spills into your sump????? also, i like the avatar!!!!!!:D :D :D

Just don't leave the sock there though, It isn't necessary to keep it there long term, it is more beneficial to remove it often & clean it. I usually only use the sock to polish off the water when siphoning, I take a long hose & tie one end down into the sock, then with the other end I go in the tank & suck everything into the sock, this is a very good way to remove detritus & not remove your water. They make 1 micron socks which work well for this purpose. The only other time i use a sock is during water changes & while blowing or blasting the rocks with a turkey baster. HTH

Ron,

I will post up a link to my 210. You can see how i did mine. But if you don't want to do it like mine than i would deffinately hook it up so that the overflows drain directly into the socks and that your skimmer does as well. I would change them once a week. You will be surprised how much dirt and stuff they pull from the water.

That is fine for a FO tank or softies but if you decide to go with harder to keep corals like sps you shouldn't leave the sock in the water that long.

i will most likely be keeping just softies....i like the idea of using one to trap stuff...i don't understand how you attach it directly on your overflow drains????? can someone explain??

Sure first off what are you using for a sump? Once i know that i can give you an ide as to how to hook it up.

Is it a tank or an actual sump?

so do your drain pipes hang above your sump water level or do they go under the water level????i know some people have the drains underwater, i guess for sound muffling purposes??

Mine go under the water or else it sounds like i have waterfall in the sump. If you want i can take pics of how my sump is set up now and how everything is plumbed out.
