filter socks?

my sump came with two filter socks for the overflows are they nesseray?or wont they just hold onto the very stuff i'm trying to skim off inbtween cleaning them ? i'm about 2and ahalf weeks into curing my rock and cycleing my tank

Kelly I use them for when I am cleaning the tank (ex: blowing off the rocks, syphoning up the detritus) other then that they stay in the closet. So I would take them out for normal use and then use them when its clean up time.

Kelly - before you use them be sure to give them a few good rinses/washes in hot water. I found out the hard way that with new felt socks, the sizing put on them makes a skimmer go nuts.
