I recently got rid of all my mechanical filtration on my tank which basically consisted of a hang on wet/dry filter, and a carbon filter in my sump. I've been without it now for about 2-3 months.

does anyone here have a non mechanical filter system? Pro's/Cons?

assuming you aren't including skimmers in there, i quit using mechanical filtration a few years back...i use filter socks from the outputs and a skimmer.. my tanks stay very clean...i run carbon occasionally just to help the clarity of the water, but i am very satisfied with the results

I think most of us here don't use any mechanical filtration, except skimmers and maybe a sock from time to time.

excuse me.. lol. I am using a skimmer so I guess I'm not 100% yet.

I think most of us reefers have moved to what's called the "Berlin Method" of reef keeping, which consists of lots of live rock and protein skimmer. Adding a sump/refugium will also help out a lot. Most mechanical filtration has a tendency to become a nitrate trap in no time at all.

I ran my tanks without mechanical filters as well besides a skimmer. Basically Berlin method here with just live rock, a skimmer and good husbandry. No complaints :)

Berlin method all the way. Especially the skimmer part. Anything that removes excess nutrients before they break down is a positive.
