I have one surviving clown fish out of two. The 1st died a week after I bought the pair...it never ate the whole week it was alive. The second one stopped eating this past week and now shows fin rot on its tail and part of its dorsal fin. My watewr chem checks out perfect with the nitrates being the only elevated parameter. I do 10% water changes a week and now plan to change a gallon every other day.

After research I believe I have overfed the tank and this has probably caused the water quality to not be at its best.

I have a healthy fire tail goby and a sickly star coral.

My tank is a 24 gal NanoCube. I have 30lbs of live rock and about the same amount of live sand. Temp ranges from 78.5 to 80 degrees.

Is there anything else I can do for the clown? This is my 1st saltwater tank so I am definitely a novice.

Thanks

My heart goes out-to-ya..... i tend to think doing water changes as you mentioned will get your parims normal........as to the fin-rot....i 'm inclined to think of any rot to be a fungal infection....? there is quite a bit of Meds for Fungal infections at most LFS, yet its imperative to have a nother tank to treat the fish..... keep in mind that Temp... and PH , is important for both tanks... keep your eye on the star fish..... if the star gets worse.... remove him pronto... do you mean " Sun Coral " ? wish i could be of more ( n Specific ) help to you.... keep us posted on your situation, cw

Thanks. I referred to my sick;y star coral.
I don't have an extra tank at this point but maybe I should consider one.

Welcome to Reef Frontiers!!!

What species of clowns is it, and what size?

Could you post the results of your water quality numbers NH3, NO2 and NO3? This will help determine how bad if at all it was in causing the problem. Could be it was pre existing or something completely different than suspected. A pic of the affected area would be a plus.

A bacterial infection may be a concern here but I would not worry about fungal issues. Did you notice anything else amiss about the clowns appearance? Listlessness, odd gilling, open mouth, bloating, excess slime/milky coating and so on...?

Cheers
Steve
