Hey everyone I am in the process of starting my own fish tank maintenance co. and looks like my first client has a 125gl with trickle filter. My first visit the rocks have some red algae on them as well some brownish filament type algae on the rocks. Its been about 2months since the last maintenance was done so I replaced the media in the phosphate reactor. Then took a sample home to test the water here are the results
Phosphate 1.71
Nitrate 80+
Nitrite 0
Ammonia 0
PH 7.4
The tank has a very large stars and stripe puffer about the size of a 16oz can.
Med. Size blue hippo
Six line wrasse
Med.-lrg sailfin tang
2 clowns
Humma Picasso trigger
I guess what I am looking for is there any good clean up crew members that wouldn't be on the menu, the puffer is a pig and messy eater and probably over fed. I am considering maybe converting the trickle filter to a refigium due to the high nitrates think the PH reading may be off it took me a couple of days to test the water it was floating in my sump to maintain temp.
Any suggestions is appreciated don't think removing any fish is an option the owner picked them out himself.
Thanks

7.4 is really nothing to worry about. More concerned with the PO4 & Nitrates.
Seems a few large WC's and the use of GFO & ChemiPure Elite would be very helpful :)

Don't think any inverts would be safe with the Puffer.

I did do a 20 gl water change when I was there and will continue to monitor the phosphate levels and change media in the reactor as needed. As for the nitrate issue the only thing I can think of is converting the trickle filter. Think do to the feeding habits it will be hard to maintain the nitrate levels think this tank is on a 2 week maintenance program but still in the process of taking it over and need to sit down with the owner but would like to have a plan before I sit down with him.
Thanks again for any help.

I think in a tank like that a trickle filter is probably going to be just as effective as a small fuge and easier to maintain long term. WC's every two weeks and regular maintenance on the filter and media reactors should get things back in order soon enough.

OK thanks I will just do the regular maintenance for now to see if I can get things back on track.

Any suggestions on a good clean up crew. I know snails are out but what about hermits or a good bottom feeder like a star fish brittle, serpent etc... I have not had puffers or Picasso's before only read about them just wondering what people have good success with. I won't be adding anything until the water parameters are back on track.
