Experts,

I have a tank up for about 3months and using 2 fluval as filter. Inside, the following medias are being used: Zero-cab, Amonia Remover, Pre-filter, and Carbon (More info @ )

It is a 46 GL tank with 50lb of LR and 40lb of LiveSand.

My question is: Does fluval filters work well with reef tank? Does it harm the reef in the long run? (or even short run?)

Thanks for your inputs.

IMO, I wouldn't use anything in a canister but carbon if I used a canister filter on my system. Really anything sitting too long can develop an accumilation of detritus on it which can in tern degrade water quality. That's why it is suggested all sponges, filter socks, filter pads etc be rinsed out or changed every 2 days at the most to prevent this from happening. Any levels of nitrates and/or phosphates can be harmful to corals (depending on the levels) and also can fuel nuicance algae to grow. As for the ammonia remover, I'm not at all familiar with the stuff, but is it to remove the toxic ammonia produced from stuff like fish waste etc? If so, that wouldn't be necessary either. Your live rock will make quick work of ammonia in your system once your tank has cycled. Infact, once your tank has cycled, you should never see any traces of ammonia or nitrites in your system again without the need of any chemicals or media, but from live rock alone. Just my 2 cents...Good luck!:)
