I'm wanting to put a few pieces of scrubbed dea rock to fill it in a bit. Just seeing if it's a bad idea. I've only used cured liverock.

as long as you dont do a bunch. a couple will generally be fune. but it dose have to cycle still. so you will see a spike in all the three tests.

How much dead rock compared to how much cycled live rock already in the tank?

If it is clean dead rock, you really shouldn't have any spikes in am. or nitrite, because there wouldn't be any dead matter to turn to am.

yep, I have. a chunk at a time. you must assume, even if you gave it the muriatic acid treatment that stuff will still decompose. and in your case in cold water.....well you know!

If I bleach rock, then do the muratic acid soak, I really don't think there is going to be any thing to decompose.

I have 70+ lbs of live rock total and I want to add 5 or less. I just want more rock to attach the corals I picked up at the bob Moore:)

yes... if this is totally rinsed, dry live rock, you shouldnt have a spike...
if its still nasty and smelly then i would say continue to rinse multiple times,
and dry out till its clean as possible.
it will take time for the bacteria to colonize the new media after adding it to the display... about 4 weeks.

Thanks I'm gonna add a couple pieces then. I'm putting the rest in a tub and let it cook for a month or two to let it get all happy before the next project:)

ok, keep in mind, I cycled a tank with dry rock NOTHING added but the dry dead rock....AND I ran freshwater though it first for about 3 weeks and did multiple FW water changes while it was decaying. in the end I had nitrates of 10ppm.

adding a piece in tropical? ok. ....in cold water....risky? adding mulptiples? I would not advise in either case.

Haha it's my bta tank. Yep I forget that I have a tropical reef tank sometimes too. I haven't had to do anything with except harvest coral out of it and top off water. But now I have some Sps frags I wanted to place high in the tank.

Just to be safe you could do a small water change and sit the dead rock in the old water with a pump for a week or two but if you are only adding less then 5lbs it really shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks Earl that's what I did with all of the rock. I put it all in a tub with a heater and a pump and water from a water change. Dumped some b.b. In there and gonna let it cook. I just picked up a couple tanks and one of em is gonna be holding that rock in a month or two. Can you say carpet tank:) as for the display I purchased a piece of cured live rock and it looks great and holds the new frags great! Sometimes I should just do it right and not try to push my luck.

I hear you , Paul. I need to take a drive up to Monroe sometime and take a look at you coldwater world, sounds neat. The ones you had at the swap meet were pretty cool.
