Heating issues with my 28 gal jbj

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

yea it has fans in it and I'm leaving the feeding hood open all night and day.

Any suggestions on where to take a chiller to get it leak tested or refilled?

Yea I don't know if I could raise the canopy without going to sunpod type thing. If someone has a design for raising it I would love to see it.

I have mine run just like you gothunder3022 it's being pumped out the overflow and returned to the side return chamber.

Ok I had the lights off for almost 24 hours and the temperature was only down to 83 so I'm pretty sure the chiller isn't working very well if at all. Where do I take the chiller to get a leek test and get it refilled? Is it something I can do or something that has to be taken in to have done?

gothunder2033 what kind of chiller do you have on yours and how is it doing? What pump do you use on yours?

Thanks everyone for all the help I really need it.

You might have some luck with a local refrigerator repair guy. Or check with your LFS.

I have a current USA 1/15hp...It's okay. I run a MJ1200 through it...there weren't a lot of options since I also have a HOB refugium. I think it's a bit undersized, it runs most of the evening...might be flow related too. Frankly the thing is too loud...I'm removing the MH soon and going with a nanotuners LED upgrade.

The fans do okay removing some heat from the light fixtures...but not really anything for heat removal from the tank. I have two tanks in my office, a JBJ 12dx with 48W of PC lighting in the canopy, it runs in the low 80's...always, even with the feeding lid removed. I have another 12 gallon open top tank...it stays bang on 76 all day, lights or no lights.

btw, what temp is the room your tank is in typically, I'm surprised you can't get it below 83 without the lights on. It's not like it's summer around here!! :p

I know I was wondering the same thing I'm taking the chiller out just to see if its adding heat some how.

Any one in Olympia area take there chiller anywhere?

Ok so I have the chiller off and am looking for a repair guy and the heat is running even hotter by about 1 degree. So maybe the chiller was helping a little. But was worried so last night I put the fan on the top and tried that. Well the temp. was 76 this morning I didn't have a heater in it because I didn't think it would work that well. So just put a heater in.

Too bad you’re on the other side of town or I would look at it for you for fee. Even that wouldn’t be worth the trip from your neck of the woods. I think I’m like 3 hours north of you.

Ok here is some pics of the chiller when its open. maybe you can tell me what to do from here because when I look at it there doesn't look like anything I can do.

Thanks for all the help everyone. Much appreciated!

I would like to see a picture of the opposite side of picture 1. Flip that unit over and take a picture of the other side.

If I had to guess at what the deal is this is what I think

That is not a refrigerated type chiller
It is a simple condenser type or something like a swamp cooler. It looks like a pump is built into it but with out a diagram or personal knowledge of the unit I cant tell from the picture for sure. The water flows into the black chamber and there must be a coiling of channels or tubes in it. The fins or silver heat sink l is what does the cooling or transferring heat to the air blowing across it. Is that a fan in the center of the back of the unit? Can’t see from the pictures.

If it is a refrigerant type chiller its really small the entire thing is enclosed in the black box. Maybe using a vibrating compressor or something but doesn’t look like any tubing in the heat sink ether.

Can you take more pictures of the electrical part from each so I can get a better idea of what’s going on with it.

yes it is a fan and I will get more pics give me a little to flip it up side down I need to remove some screws. If it is the swamp cooler type what is wrong with it?

If it is then its all about airflow and cooler the air the better. If you have it in the stand under the tank that may not work. The intake and exhaust definitely have to not be blocked by anything. I am interested in the electrical. Seems from the picture that is just overkill for a condenser type cooler. Unless it the power supply for the pump and fan if they are not 120vac components. That’s a large transformer and capacitor.

Here is all the pics I can get tonight. I can't Turn it upside down tonight because one screw is striped.

So I looked it up on the pacific coast imports site and it looks like that is a heater and a chiller. Any chance you have been running it in the heat mode? It does say its good for tanks up to 22 gallons.

the quality of the owners manual is so bad I can not read the labels. If I could read the labels or if some one has one that could take a picture of it or scan it in that would shed a lot of light on the subject.

Don’t worry about the pictures I see how its all put together on the website

There seems to be several layers of components in the black box. Nothing is labeled compressor but one I think says refrigeration component on something to that nature. If I had a clearer pictures of that manual I could help at least for testing because it also has the wiring diagram on it too.

Ok I was using it on a 28 gallon tank and it was in the stand. But it only droped 1 degree. Do you think that is my only problem or is there more to it?
