I have noticed that the temps in our tank vary about 4 degrees from when the halides are on vs. off.

low is about 76.4 high is 79.5-6, is that a reasonable variation? I assume in the real life reefs temps vary from daytime sunny temps to night time.

or should my temps be managed better?

That’s fine
Not even a concern imo.
Some try and maintain there systems with in .1 degree but that is just for the clinically addicted and OCD reefer.

I’ve read that in some areas of the red sea the water surface temperature can exceed 100 degrees on occasion. Some of the things we get come from around those parts.

I had read a change in water temp is one of the primary causes of an ich outbreak. They didn't say how big of a swing though...
