I am going to QT my Kole Tang since he has ich. I have a new 20G tank up and running and I am going to treat the tank with Kent Marine Rx-P. If I am using the treatment, do I just leave the salinity in the QT tank at a normal level? If I do, is it ok to put a chunk of LR in there? I know people do hypo-salinity treatment for Ich, I am just not sure if that is needed in conjunction with chemical treatment or if it's ok to have some LR in there. The tank is coming up to temperature and I am hoping to put Kole in there tomorrow morning. Thanks for the help.

I understand that hyposalinity is more effective than any chemical treatment.
If I remember correctly, the RXp needs to be used with a skimmer. I really believe hypo is your best bet. It works very very well.

Yep, I'm gonna do the hypo. I'm also scratching the idea of using LR and will use PVC pipe instead.

You're very smart to choose the hypo, it will work where many medications will fail! Just be sure to take your time and use a refractometer!!!

Good Luck
Susie :)

Treatment will only work if all of your fish are treated at the same time, and the display tank is kept fishless for about 4 weeks. Do you have more than just the Kole Tang? As Susie pointed out, hyposalinity needs to be done with a refractometer, to make sure your salinity is accurate (14 ppt). This is a really good thread on what to expect with hyposalinity, and some good questions Fish Moving Time Please!

Very true, it is also not recommended in tanks without an established biological filter in place. It is pepper based and not something I would recommend.

Good to hear about the RxP. I don't think a few days is enough to have a biological filter and I'm not using a skimmer on the QT. I have more fish that just a Kole but he is the only one that has shown any white spots. Is it really necessary to move every fish into the QT? I don't see myself being able to catch the firefish in a fish trap. My Kole Tang, on the other hand, for some reason actually likes to hang out in the fish trap and will be a really easy catch. And I do have a refractometer. Thanks for the help!

I recommend the hypo......

looks like people already gave ya some hints :)

I have HOB filters if you need to use one for QT.

Best,
ILham

If you don't remove the other fish, then the parasites will still be in the display, and can reinfect the tang at another time. The QT may help him get over this bout of ich, but will not keep him from getting it again.

Once when my clarkii got ich, I tried the garlic extreme with her. 2 yrs later she is still alive and fat and healthy. I never feed my fish a meal w/o garlic and vita C in it. I haven't even seen one spot of ich on my fish since I was a newbie. I don't know if it's because I try to be diligent on water changes and quality or because the garlic really helps. I'm not really big on treating with medicine so I tried the garlic alternative. I know some who swear by it. I really don't swear by it, but I think it helped my girl. Hope this helps you a bit! If you do decide to get the Garlic Extreme shop around. I found a place here that sold it for like 18 bucks and then another place that sold it for 10.

I've been feeding with Garlic since I knew it was going to take a few days to get the QT up and running. I think I'm just going to treat Kole in the QT and continue feeding the other fish with Garlic and hope for the best. Thanks again for everyone's help.
