I am currently running a 50 gallon filter on my 60 gallon tank and was wanting to upgrade to a canister filter for. Better filtrationBut wasn't shure if they where ok for saltwater any thoughts thx in advance

I would recommend upgrading to a sump system. Any filtration filter design will become a nitrate trap without near daily cleanings.

Your filtration depends on the type of system your running. Most will assume its a reef or will be a reef. Let folks know a little about your system and what your going for.

+1 on Don's advice, for example: a canister style filter could/would be sufficient for a Fish-only system, just OK for Fish and Softies but highly impractical for a Reeftank. So tell us all about your system, what you'd like to have and experience in saltwater.

Sorry for the late reply I am doing a fish only tank decidedTo part out all my corals tobmy smaller tanks currently I am running a back pack filter Cpr protein skimmer With about 60 pounds of live rock in tank just had to have theSnow flake eel but want the best water conditions possible

the best water conditions for a fish only tank is clarity, low nitrate and phosphate, and very little detritus build up. Biological filtration keeps the nitrite and ammonia in check but can quickly build high levels of N+P, you will have to be very conscientious about cleaning the canister filter or whatever you use for mechanical filtering, just like a house guest... after 3 days its got to go.
