Anyone out there install water filteration on homes?

My new house is on a community water system, but about once every other month or so the water is red for part of the day.

I would like to get a filter for all my household water, but do not know where to go or what kind to get. Most of the google searches seem like advertisements more than real information on what to get.

I don't want to soften my water with salt, just filter out the rust from the valves in the water tower. I was looking at maybe a sediment filter, but don't want to replace a $100+ filter every month either.

I would like to get a system with backwashable filters. Don't know if I want to use charcol or not, as if I wanted to pay $100+ a month for water, I would have bought something in the city.

The house is on Whidbey Island, and I'm out on a U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier in the middle of the ocean & not coming home anytime soon.

If someone has ideas, please post. If you would like to sell and install the system for me, post as well :D

Thanks

Hey Ryan, hop on line and ask the filterguys what they recommend. My best friend is a plumber and I bet I can get him to tag along to see Floyd's setup and swing over and install a filter setup for you, or at least have a look and see how big a job it is. If there is access it should be pretty easy.
I'm on a well and I use a "sand" filter. It does a pretty good job of removing the red in the water and I change it monthly. I buy them 6 at a time at lowes and I think they are ~$5.

Thanks Todd.

If you wouldn't mind the next time you're in town.

I was thinking of doing the sand bed filter, just was having a lot of problems trying to get actual intel on them. The wife is wanting to do this pretty quickly, and if a $5 filter is all I need, then that sounds like a good route to go.

Ryan I would email or PM one of the sponsors that specialize in filtration. YOu would be surprised how much info they can give you.

Sorry Mike, I should have thought of that...
Ryan, just let me know what type of filtration you want to go with, and I will drag Richard out there and have a look.
Do get some expert input on what filter system to use, I was just passing along what I have, it may well not be best for you.
