High ammonia levels

If you cycled the tank and had an ammonia reading of zero and added some fish you could have an ammonia spike as the tank tries to catch up to the increased bio-load. The bacteria should catch up. When did you add the fish?

the first fish was added probably 2 weeks after it was set up, after it had looked all brown, and that fish was the chromis. then this past tuesday i added the 2 clowns.

i had not been good about testing the water though after adding the fish so that was a mistake on my part, just a little to excited i suppose.

i will most certainly be very strict about making sure everything is in check from now on though as i do not want to have any problems or scares such as this one occur again in the future.

Heres what I would do. Keep up with testing the water if you see any ammonia do a water change. If ammonia goes to zero and you see any nitrite do water changes. If you see zero with both ammonia and nitrite and you have nitrates over 25 do a water change. Do not add anything until all are zero.
