I posted this in the water water fountain forum, but realized it may not be seen there so I reposted it here.

I don't know if anyone has experienced this before, but yesterday evening about about 5:30 half my house suddenly lost power. It was the side that doesn't have my reef tank on it.
I went to the breaker box and looked for a popped breaker. Nothing was amiss.
I tried to reset every switch on the panel hoping something good would happen.(ya know like lights?)
I then went around unplugging everything and feeling the wall (warm or hot spot)to see if something was shorting out near a plugin. In my backroom/computer room/tank room I have many, many things plugged in. I thought that it had to be something back there.
About 5:45 I starting calling electricians in the phone book. I found one that would make an emergency visit on a Saturday evening. ($150 service call).
When he showed up a 1/2 hour later, I told him I thought the problem was in the breaker box or the backroom.
He looked at the side of the house that was dark for a few seconds and walked straight over to a wall plugin (had nothing plugged in to it) and pushed a circuit tester in and said the problem was right here. At that moment the TV flickered and a few sparks shot out of the wall plugin.
The electrician then replaced the plugin and told me to get the rest of the plugins and switches in the house replaced. SOON.
The company that made the plugins and switches in my house was one of the biggest, Leviton. But what the electrician told me for about 15 years they made some very crappy ones that were used by many many contractors up untill the mid 80's.
The wall plugin that he removed from the wall was pretty much crispy. All the wires had the insulation burned off and all the wires going to it were burned up. This was a major fire just maybe minutes, hours, or days away, but it was going to happen. Looking at it just scared the crap out of me.
This plugin wasn't one of the ones I have mulitple pumps, lights, extention cords coming out of it was just a unused one by the outside door.
Maybe some of you that have houses built in the 70's and 80's might want to checkout something like this. I never dreamed that my house that was built in 81 would be like this.

is your main braker useing the older little circle fuses?

If so you might want to consiter haveing someone install a 2nd braker just for your tank. giveing you one masive block of outlets just for the tank,

as far as the wall things goes, sounds like a short of something, your lucky your house didnt burn down. I hope no one's house ever burns down.

but if your house is older and the wireing was done, suspect (like my house)
you might wanna replace all of the outlets in your house. and check switchs as well.

you can turn the power off and replace the outlets your self, (just plug something in to make sure the power is off first)

The house has copper wire. It is a problem with the Leviton plugins and switches 100%.

It's not the wiring or breaker box at all. I do have separate circuits for my big tank, but I do have to admit the one side of the house is a little over loaded.

id suggest runing (litterly right now) to home depot with about 150$ for outlets and switchs.

u do you not want to wait and find out if its gonna do it ageain

You got know it. It really scared the crap out of me. I didn't sleep well last night.

Oulets go bad and take out the whole chain. Just get them swapped out and go back to bed. Stay away from the contractor packs at HD and Lowes.

Hey Don, So what's the difference between the 2 buck outlets and the 4? I always bought the ones that were a bit more but never new the difference.

The electrican that I had over, said that these outlets were not good ones. The were made to fit two different sizes of wires and that the smaller (14ga) wire didn't provide as snug a fit in the quick fit plugins and over time loosened up causing shorting and fires.
The reason it was widely used for so long is that it was a industry standard.

Quality contacts and their ability to keep the contacts tight. If youve ever seen the cheapo decoras vs the good ones. The cheap ones rattle and use the cord prongs to take up the slop. I like to buy the tightest ones I can.

Also some of the cheapo have two wire size rating for the push in connections on the back. The one you connect to the house wires. These are easy for the happy home owner but if you have the smaller wire the connections will be loose. Use the screw terminals anyways that way you know their tight.

i just want to reitterate something don said. use the screw connections on the sides or the outlets instead of the push-in quickies on the back. tou are relying on spring tention to make contact and if that circuit is evre loaded enough to heat up the wire or connection it can take the temper out of the spring clamp and cause the same problem again. we are using so many more electrical appliances these days that its not difficult to overload even a modern circuit.

Holy.... My wife and I remodeled our house about 8 or 9 years ago using the same companys (contractor packs). anyway over the last couple of years I have been replacing switches and outlets ever since. every single outlet, ground fault and switch in our three story home is from that company.Switches would actually "POP" and shoot sparks when switched.

Good thing they are are easily replaced, Cooper & leviton both make good products, you just need to read the labels throughly. I agree on using the screw terminals. In some homes they run a 14g circuit to bedrooms & the sort because they figure you'll never need more power than that but these days I would want everything 12g because we now use so much juice it is crazy. In a new home I would use AFCI breakers to the bedrooms (I think that is NEC code anyways). If I had to do it all new, I'd also set-up a switching unit for a generator, & surge protect the entire house also.
