On 7/2/05 I treated my 165 gal reef tank with Chemi-clean to remove unwanted and new cyano bacteria growth. Turned off UV and skimmer, added recommended dosage to tank (estimate 110 actual gallons of sea water).

Treated for 24 hours then did 25 gal water change, put in carbon and a poly filter to remove the medication. Chemi clean m,edication killed the bacteria.

Eve of 7/3/05 I turned on UV and protein skimmer (Euro model). Skimmer fills cup with clear water and overflows within 30 seconds. Left carbon and pad in sump. On 7/5/04 I turned onthe skimmer and it again bubbled over and overflowed within 30 seconds.

Any idea of how to remove thie chemi-clean product so I can resume skimming. May be relevant to note that I have a plenam with aragonite sand layers, seperated by screans. Substrate is six inches deep.

Are you certain it is the chemi-clean solution that is causing the skimmer to overflow and not a result of the die-off of the cyno or something resultant from the process and having the skimmer off? Just tossing that out there. Anyhoot, like you have been doing, the best way to pull out chemi clean is lots of water changes and frequent carbon changes... both being benificial in fighting the spike of nutrients left from the died bacteria as well as removing the anti-biotic. Also, if the skimmer is in the sump have you simply let it over flow for a while to see if things calm down after a bit?

Appreciate advise---there are no measurable spikes in Ammonia, nitrate, nitritye and no visual discoloration. I will try leaving skimmer on with bubbles overflowing into the sump. Two questions: 1) How long might it take for skimmer to settle down 2) will micro air bubbles entering sump from skimmer, and clouding the display tank, hurt corals or fiah?

How long, can't say. As far as micro-bubbles, I wouldn't be concerned. The water will be overflowing to and falling to the surface of the sump the addition of bubbles should be negligable assuming your pump is being feed near the bottom of the sump. Coral, no worries. Some say they can irritate fishes' gills, I for one wouldn't worry one bit about it.

Welcome to Reef Frontiers!!!

You can also try to adjust the skimmer (on my Euroreef model, push the output tube all the way down), so the water level is lower in the skimmer body. That might help it run a bit without overflowing the cup.

I agree with Nikki, If you lower your tube and can get to skim without filling the collection cup so fast, it will help remove the impurities faster.

I was assuming that the adjustment pipe was all the way down if he resorted to turning off the skimmer. But I guess you can't rule anything out. I'm denfinately with Ken and Nikki on that one as well.

Dsl4fish In my early days I used chemi clean once and it well make your skimmer go nuts, just turn it down like mentioned above and it well take a few days before it gets back to normal. Also I run poly pads all the time and the first time you add one to your system the skimmer well go nuts so just turn it down and work slowly back to normal. Change that poly pad out after a few days as it well suck most of that chemi clean out, replace with a new one about once a month.
