How do you get ich?

Hi Terry, Haven't spoken to you in a while. Also I agree with what you said about quarintine as I said the same thing.

I know that you don't agree with me that ich is almost always in myreef and that is hard to prove. It is there, and as I said it does not grow to epidemic proportions but that is my tank. I do believe (like I said) that you need to quarintine properly. I remember well when this hobby started that as soon as we introduced a fish we would have an outbreak. We did not have to quarintine then because there was always copper in our tanks as it is in most LFSs.

If one fish has it, there are numerous tromphants (immature paracites) in the water and they are already infecting all the other fish.
You can tryu that "reef safe" medication, I have no experience with it of you will have to remove all fish to treat them either with copper or hyposalinity (I personally like copper and have cured hundreds if not thousands of fish with it) You have to leave the tank with no fish for about 8 weeks with the temperature at about 82 degrees.

You can still use hyposalinity and erradicate it. I am curious though how you plan to store the corals and rock? Chances are, that storage container can be used as a QT if large enough. Something I would seriously consider.

In any event, you will need to keep the corals and rock seperate for about 6 weeks to break the life cycle and not re infect the tank. If you do hypo in the main tank with everything removed, be very wary of water quality. Hypo will kill all the living organisms in the tank as well. I would also be very sure the salinity remians at 14 ppt for no less than 4 weeks past the last day the trophonts are noticed on the fish. Wouldn't actually hurt to go 6 considering the sandbed.

Don't play with the temp, leave it where the fish are normally accustom to. Higher temps will indeed speed up the life cycle of the parasite which many believe helps but the downside is if too high, the temp will play havock with the pH of the fish's blood lowering it's immune response. FWIW, 86° is the optimumm reproductive temp of the parasite so you accomplish little otherwise except to infect the fish faster.

Well it looks like i am going to treat it with malichite green .Will see what happens.My coral guy said its what he uses when he gets ich.Says it only takes 3 days.And is reef safe.

I really wouldnt do that. Its totally up to you. The collateral damage could be very large.

Malachite green has been found to be slightly effective for ich. I did not know it was reef safe but I guess you will find out.

Well It Is reefsafe at least in my tank was worried but have added malichite green for 3 days strait with no skimmer or charcoal and hippo tang had more than 30spots of ich on 2day today is day 4 and only has 4 spots nearly gone.Will turn on skimmer and run 2 cups of charcoal on friday and a 10gal water change ..Tested all water perimeter's and water quality is still perfect Its weird but my corals actually look better..........So we will see my reef guy said it will be gone after this but recommends garlic regularaly..:lol:

ich for me had become very frequent but i agree with you about the dificulty in taking out the fishes with all the places to hide. I succed with some fishes without taking the out of the tank: I prepare my own frozen food with shrimp, squid, fish eggs, moussels, (what it is easy if you buy and chop all of this from frozzen) and I ADD A LOT OF GARLIC AND MEDICATED DRY FOOD, I chop that a lot, mixing everything, I wrape like it in salami sizes, then frozze it, and you scratch that with a very sharp knife obteining flakes. After you feed the fishes more frequently but less amount of food. Normally IMO it helps to give chance to recover their fish inmune system. IMO again ich is allway in my tank as the flu is in the air and you will cath it for sure if you are under stress.

Well im happy to say that I believe the ich is gone so yesterday i added charcoal and turned protein skimmer back on......
