I have the dreaded Hairy Mushrooms, and other mushrooms wanting to overtake my SPS. How do you guys trim back your mushrooms with out affecting your tank inhabitants?

thanks in advance,
Ed

I Take A Pair Of Sissers And Cut The Tops Off. They Grow Back And The Cut Ones Will Grow Too.

Its been almost impossible as far as I know to actually kill mushrooms and keep other corals alive, the little guys are hardy and prolific as you know. I have scraped them off with a razor blade and they grow back from almost nothing left on the rock. I guess if you scraped them and then used boiling ro water in a syringe it might kill them off. I really dont know. Maybe joes juice? what do you think?

Its on a seperate rock... make sure that it doesnt touch other rockwork... also depends on what mushroom... I have hairy/frilly mushroom and they are well behaved.

Heck Even A Saline Drop And Ph Shift Won't Kill Them I Did Yse An Old Soildering Iron Once I Got Up On A Saterday Morning And Tried It. It Works But Man The Smell Is Horrid I Even Tried Joes Juice I Figured Heck It's An Anemonie No Luck.

awwww... I want the mushrooms!! I must have the wrong kind of mushrooms, because mine grow so sloooooow. Send them to me!

Do you feed them? I turn off the pumps and squirt frozen food on them. It really seems to help them grow for me. HTH you. Steve

Ok here is something worth trying if you can take it out of the water it would be best. Cut the top off with scissors and then cover the base with thick superglue gel, and let it harden for a minuit or so. That should do it for you me thinks.

If they are not on the same rock as your frags, move the rock!!!! If they have attached....... you could be in trouble. As far as I know, There is no real effective way of killing them. You ought to be able to find some takers for the shrooms tho.

Injecting them with a good dose of lemon juice should do the trick, if you want to kill them....

One thing I've noticed about the spread of mushrooms in my tank...they only detach and spread to other rocks when they get too crowded. One they detatch, they tend to float around the tank for a few days until they find a suitable landing spot...they re-attach and begin spreading...if you can catch them in the free-floating stage, you can just move them to a fuge or something...

ed if your looking to get rid of some mushrooms, i really like them and would be happy to take them off your hands, the are one of the few corals i have no problem keeping!

Bshane,
I was trying that last week. They are so close to my SPS. I would break my corals.
If you can figure some way to move them with power head or etc..You can have as many as you want. I just do not want to knock off more corals.

hey i can understand that, im not even sure id want to be waving a powerhead around in there, your tank i absolutely breathaking the way it is, i wouldnt want to risk blowing stuff over maybe long forseps, gently lift them off the rock?? if they are irreachable we can just try it another time

anyhow take care ed well talk to ya soon
at the meeting if not sooner

Ed Cut The Caps Off With A Pair Of Sissors. The Only Way I Have Found To Eradicate Them Is To Pull Rocks And Use A Soildering Iron. Ive Tried Joe's Juice, Kalk. A Tooth Brush.of Course A Copper Banded Butterfly Works Well But Any Thing With A Polyp Is Fair Game.

Hmmmm...BigT mentioning mushrooms and glue in the same sentance... ...It's funny that the very things I wouldn't mind having everyone else is trying to get rid of...... ;)
