i filled my new "used" 180 with hose water out the garage for a leak test about two weeks ago. all went well. i've heard that after 48hrs all the chlorine and stuff disipates. i dont believe cause where would it go? lol

But i filled my 40 with water out of that tank and put all my 1 year old dry rock in it to make sure everything on it is dead. after a few days i plan on putting a heater, pump and some salt in it and letting it sit for a few weeks before setting up my new tank.

"Chlorinated tap water can also be allowed to sit in an open container for several days. Although this will rid the water of chlorine, it is an imprecise and time-consuming method that may not be suitable for your needs."

I would check with your local water company to see if they use chloramine over chlorine. Then go from there. I think chloramine is much more of an issue to deal with than chlorine and I have heard the same thing you have about chlorine.

oh wow i have no idea. im in the city of olympia. im pretty sure it has something in it cause it smelled a little like a pool. had that little tingy smell if that makes sense. lol guess ill just go get some dechlorinator and add it in.

as far as the rock goes it should be pest free shouldnt it?

Yes it should be pest free. The worst it would have spiders in it. They wont last long when you put them in water.

they guy i got it from said he started to do a cycle for about a week then pulled it all back out and quit the hobby i guess. how much of a cycle do you think i could have

You would be starting all over again. Its basically dead/base rock at this point.

What about the other stuff in the water? Floride, silicates, metals, etc. I would get a water test from your water company before using it in an aquarium.

chlorine is the least of your worries using tap water, why do you think pools have massive filter and conditioners? Tap water is not safe to swim in, but we force our fish to live it it.

some of these chemicals/minerals and such will contribute to an algae outbreak. The person that showed me the ropes when I started in this hobby insisted that I have an RODI unit before I set up my tank. Do you have or can you borrow a TDS meter. It will give you an idea how bad the water is. Ideally you want it to read zero, but I know a few people that have a low number that have no problems using the water.
A lot of these are trace elements in natural seawater.
