calculator i found says 90 pounds or so for a 5' sand bed in a 20 long. sound right?

I'd buy two 40 pound sacks and start from there. Sounds like too much to me. ;)

That's way too much sand for a 20L. How deep of a sand bed do you want? A 20L isn't that deep so you'll lose a lot of tank space if you go to deep.

i said in the original post i was going for 5', and strangely enough, im aware of the dimentions of my tank.. LOL
its a display fuge, and i want a deep sandbed, probably would have mentioned that if I had considered how insane it must sound to fill it almost halfway with sand...... not worried at all about the space.

thanks. 90 sounds like way too much to me. i was thinking about ordering it online so someone else can carry it around, but i don't want to pay someone to do it twice... ;)

I'd think 30lbs in a 20 long would be about right, maybe 40lbs. I like DSB's you get some creatures in there you'll never see in the display but It takes about a year to really see some good stuff. If I ever do a big tank again it will have lots of sand in the main display, I don't care what they say I like it.

So, estimates from you guys now sit at 80 and 30. :) I think I'll just stop and buy a 20 pound bag, dump it in the tank, and see what I end up with.. Should be able to judge it from there..

LOL yea find out what you like and go with it! Just post us some Pics!! :)

Aristotle was once asked how long a man's legs should be.
His reply: Only long enough to touch the ground.
As to how to apply this wisdom to the depth of sand beds, I really have no idea.

I personally prefer 3" so as to allow it to be all turned over yet rock somewhat stable even with many sand diggers in the tank.
