well I have said my peace and time for this to die.... Mods please.remove to stop the post count upping

I was surprised this ever became a rule on Reeffrontiers. I wonder what happened? I always thought rules to be a member for so long and to have so many posts before selling on threads like RC was to help protect against scammers. I personally won't buy something from someone with only a few posts that hasn't been a member long unless they're local and I can meet them in person.

I do remember one individual complaining about "newbies" asking for handouts in the for sale/free section. It's never bothered me though. I'm just wondering what changed that the rule was put in place? I don't think having a bunch of posts really makes anyone a contributing member. Some posts are very valuable, others aren't. When I was new, I read a lot more posts than I replied to.

Now that I've been here a while, I like the social aspect of Reeffrontiers. It's cool to be able to chat with individuals that share the same hobby. There's been times I've used this site to gain knowledge and info from others or share my own experiences as well. I also think it's cool to be able to buy and sell equipment and livestock for less than retail because this hobby isn't cheap.

hahaha, one more thing. You should've seen me posting like crazy with valuable info such as "welcome" and "hi" on another reefing thread when they decided to add an online casino that allows you to earn playing cash with each post. lol...

It really does matter, when you see someone who's OBVIOUSLY posting frivolous posts, just to get to their 50 count minimum, in order to buy/sell. Reef Frontiers isn't about buying/selling. It's about being a Contributing Member. Lately, we've seen several people, who are OBVIOUSLY padding their post counts, in order to reach their 50 posts. Yesterday, it was ridiculous.

Totally agree. RF is not about buying/selling/trading, it is about having an online community of people who enjoy reef keeping as much as everyone else. A place to come find answers, ask questions and just have a good time. I know when I first started I too did not post much. But even now I wouldn't care about padding my posts just so I could buy/sell/trade stuff. Why do we need to do that?

I feel that 50 posts is to little and that it sould really be 50 posts AND 30 day membership. People shouldn't just come here to sell stuff because this site is More reef related than say Craigslist.

Okay sorry I'll get off the soapbox now. :)

LOL That explains the almost $18,000.00!!!! Heck, I don't even know what to do with the Casino Cash. I've never even looked at the Casino. :D

The 50 posts is hard as I am buying lots of stuff to set up a reef and yet do not have enough progress to start a new photo album. I hope to have water in the tank this weekend and then become a fully realized "Contributing Member."

I picked up a pump for the sump for example through PM so you are just going to see less activity on the for sale threads and more undercover bidding.

The other problem is that I am yet to encounter something that is not in the archives. With the search button right up there I have more than I can use.

No offense, but you joined in October 2005 and you only have 21 posts?

You should be a fully contributing member of the reef society by now I would've thought.

I'd like to 2nd what BlueRam said, the 50 number sort of punishes those of us newbies who dig around for the answers rather than post a question that has been answered countless times in the past. I don't need to sell anything yet so it has not had much effect on me, but if you are looking to buy used gear it sure might.

Just adding onto my post count:D:D:badgrin::badgrin:. It really is not that hard to get to a 50 post count. If you are in the process of setting up a new system. Ask questions. There are plenty of questions to ask and respond too that will quickly get you above and beyond the magic 50 post count requirement.

In his (our) friendly defence I have few posts because I got interested in a reef, did tons of research, read for countless hours and still feel like I have very little to contribute. I can tell you what I have read, and give you the prevailing theory on most subjects, but I have little experence to evaluate what I have read for accuracy.
i joined the boards when I got interested, bought a tank 9 months later, did all the startup by the book and here I lurk with little to add while I gain much needed experience.
I very much appreciate all that you and others contribute!

Agreed,

Waahoo, I have received 3 posts just from this thread. *lol* So easy to do even a caveman can do it.

No offense at all! I joined RF right about the time the Mike (mojoreef) gave a talk at a gsas meeting and used my user name from the planted tank. The rf is one of the best places for equipemnt as it is LOCAL and you meet great people.

Until recently I had neither the time or space to set up a true reef so I have done some lurking. I also find that 99% of my newbe questions are answered by the search button.

I should have a genx pump on my doorstep when I get home. I guess I need to post a few pictures tonight to rebuild karma.

Looking forward to when I can become a producer, not a consummer. (if you have a planted tank I can help you out!)

The BS stopps here. I am the post count king around here..
And no one will beat me !!!
I will stay up late and wake up early to beat anyone that will try.. :)
Just jokeing. (maybe not) post count devided by months I think I'm right up there :)

I get alot of BS for my high post count..
EVERYONE here gets a laugh at it..
I agree with both sides.
I follow the rules..
Mark is just upset that the "new post" page on this forum on some mornings has 15 different threads with the same guy on all the threads and the posts are like this
" any updates"
" Nice tank"

Defiantly just a new guy padding his post count to try and sell stuff.

I have woke up in early in the morning before and responded to mutliple threads but I also for a long time was setting up a tank and was a newb (which in respect to all elders here) I am still a newb...
So this thread is just a venting thread..
I vented and now you all can sit back and laugh at me some more..
I like it..
(not right in the head )

Yeah, if Myteemouse had joined a year later than he did we would have been accusing him of padding his thread count, he must hold the record for the quickest to 1,000 post, lol.

Personally when I am selling something I would rather get a PM than try to keep track of stuff on the thread itself anyway. In a PM it is real easy to see who responded first, second etc. I can see which ones I have read, what I have responded to etc.

If your a newb wanting to buy use PM.

If your a newb wanting to sell, go to craigslist.

In defense of the long time members with low post counts, I too spent a lot of lurking time and preferred to search for my answers rather than ask questions. I only started a new post with a question if I could not find the answer (and then I got slammed a couple of times for not using the right terms, fortunately I knew enough people, personally, that would come in and actually answer my questions)

Remember a newb still has to be a member for 30 days before they can post in those sections, so post count alone doesn't get them those privileges, so we should have tolerance for those who post a lot of "nice build" post, maybe they just had a sleepless night and spent it in the membership showcase forum. Although it would be nice to see "nice build, I really like how you ___________ ". Then you could tell they actually read it:rolleyes:

Ohhh... I can't help myself sorry... Post number 748!!! :D

I just had to get one post closer to MyTeeMouse. *lol*

Cheers,
Alex

I read most of the post during the day while I am driving. I hate it when the last post is someone only looking to get their count highet. And I reallllllly hate when a Thread becomes Jesus and comes back fron the dead just for a post count.... NICE PICTURES MAN

Hey Adam... You are only about 400 post under me. You better catch up! That's one more to the count! Almost there~!:lol:

Yea but got a year and a 9-10 months on me :)
I said Post count divided by months as a member I think I am near or at the top! :)
now one more closer to you
