What happened if you left the lights off for a week or two? Wouldn't that kill off the algae? I really have know experience in this field i just wanted to try and help out.

hey becky i had hair aglae and beat it
what i did was take out my live rock that was bad about half my rock i but it all in the 1 bucket and had an air pump running in there i left it in complete drakness for about 5 days i then scrubed it with a tooth bruch rinsed it of in fresh saltwater and placed back in the tank the hair algea that was left in thee tank was pulled or bruchsed off and syphoned up a small hose in to a super filter sock in a bucket which cleans ur water and also alows u to recycle the water and do as many times as want just my 2 cents
