Hello all,
I just got a juvi imperator angel yesterday from Barrier Reef. Safe to say little guy kicks ass. He was only eating bring shrimp at the store so I stared him on a regiment of pellet and Selcon. Haha, I fooled him into taking pellet food with an eye dropper mixed with brine and pellet.

Does anyone have any experience with this fish? I have always wanted a big angel not that I have one I wanna grow him huge. Anyway, pics to follow.

Also anyone know who sells a sponge based pellet food?

I hope you have a large fish tank. These fish can get at least 16-18 inches long. I would not give this fish brine or mysis shrimp as the main food source as this is not enough for this (or any) fish to sustain a health life. You want your fish to thrive, not survive in your tank. If you went to last weeks PSAS meeting, Lee Birch talked about fish nutrition. This was very interesting subject with great information. Everyone that was in attendance is re-thinking what type of foods they are going to feed their fish.

Lee,

Can you please comment on this fish label:

After first glance, the ingredients appear to be OK. I like the fact cod liver oil (aka Vitamin D) is present, however I am not too sure with the fiber count and whether this will be used by the fish. Also, I would like to see a breakdown of the specific vitamins present in this food (specifically if stablized vitamin C is used).

Kirk,

I'd say it is a good omnivore food, but not on a routine basis. I'm unsure why the fiber is so high. It is higher than desired but shouldn't be a problem using this for about 5 or 6 feedings out of every 21.

It seems like Hikari is 'getting the word' of proper marine fish food! :D

Lee,

Two comments:

1. Could the fiber be the main ingredient that is binding the food together (hence the high amount)?
2. So would you use Hikari food and a Ocean Nutrition Angelfood formula soaked in vitachem and selcon be a good selection??

I am trying to change/develop a good fish nutrtion practice and I am still learning.

Please be patience with me and all my questions. :D

Kirk,

You don't have to worry about asking questions. I have a reasonably high thresh hold of patience! :D After all, that's why I'm here. . .

Upon further reflection, the fiber is coming from the algae. It is the second ingredient listed. Herbivores do take in fiber vis a vis their algae intake. When I look at the analysis of marine algae I find listed fiber in the range from 10 to 15%. So I wouldn't sweat this fiber content (unless your carnivores are eating a lot of it).

You can write to them and ask if there is any other ingredients (e.g., wheat or gluten, etc.) in the product, not listed on the label. That would settle the matter. Just as a safety net, include the question if all the listed ingredients are from the ocean/sea.

I suspect this is a good product. Combined with supplement soaks, and the Angelfood, it could be a relatively staple diet. Include feedings of some variety like: scallop, frozen/thawed living clam, dried marine algae, and whole plankton from various suppliers or the supermarket and I think it would do for a few years.

Lee,

Thanks for the reply. This helps. As I plan on keeping multiple large angels in my tank; I want to ensure I am getting proper nutrition for the fish to thrive.

thanks again.
