greetings all,
i got an Imperator Angelfish thats doing well eats well swims well etc.. but his colors are fading they are not the sharp colors you would expect and somewhat faded... any ideas why? Thanks!

stress can cause this as well..

what's the size of your emperor and what is the size of your tank??

do you have other fish in the tank that are exhibiting this behavior or is it just the emperor??

Thank you all. He is about 4 inches in a 180 gallon tank and he is the king of the tank. All other fish are his servants. He is already an adult. Water parameters are perfect. I have someone who maintains my fish tank and all other fish are fine. He started eating Nori two days ago (thanks to all for the tips). All other fish are very colorful (Purple tang, flame angel; two percs; and a yellow watchman goby)

for now a 180 is a good size, but eventually the emperor may out grow this tank..

was this fish purchased at a LFS or online? if locally, did you make sure it was fed in your presence? did its behavior seems OK, (ie, the fish was aware of your prescence, clear eyes/fins, appeared healthy (that is, the dorsal area appeared full and not sunken in).

I purchased the fish from a friend. he was doing ok but i am afraid i am going to lose him :( i just noticed that he is breathing heavily and the cleaner shrimps are working on cleaning him up... one of his eyes is blurry. any suggestions to help the poor guy? he was doing super well up until yesterday when teh maintenance guy came in and did hte water change.

do you have an established QT up and running that are the same water parameters as your main tank?

blurry eyes is common with large angels esp. emperor..try to catch him and use in the QT tank an antibotic like Maracyn II..I would highly recommend you read Lee's post medicine list:

However, the mere fact it is breathing heavy is not a good sign and you might be pass the point where medicine will help. I wish I had better news for you. I had an emperor and blue face angels die for no apparent reason several months ago. I was heartbreaking to watch.

If you can't get it into a QT tank, I'd suggest an immediate large water change. I'd also suggest testing for ammonia. Don't wait for the maintenance guy....do it asap. Heavy breathing is a typical sign of ammonia toxicity, as it burns their gills and they have to breath harder in order to get the same amount of oxygen. Use of heavy aeration might help as well as increasing flow.
