Let me repost my question here since the ignorant and arrogant RC moderator decided to exercise their dictatorship.

NOTE: Interceptor is a dog de-wormer that requires vet's approval. This thread's purpose is not to ask or tell you where you can buy it. But the possibility that this is not really the drug that is required to treat red bugs, the solution could be simpler using readily available aquarium drugs. Do not discuss purchase options please.

While doing my purchase of Interceptor drugs, I came across their medical content disclaimer on the ingredients. It seems it only contains praziquantel and Milbemycin oxime at around a 9:1 ratio (majority of it being praziquantel).

That lead me to the question on whether the other 10% ingredient Milbemycin oxime help if at all on the killing of redbugs at all. Maybe all it is needed is the right quality of praziquantel and the other ingredient is not important at all.

If that is the case, that will solve alot of our 'quest' to buy interceptor for red bugs, pay the vet etc. and just use our aquarium everyday prazi de-wormers.

Any thoughts or fellow hobbyist have try just using prazi and if it is enough.

Praziquantel has been thought to be the main ingredient in Interceptor, for a long time. There are many threads about it, along with dosing information. The problem is, obtaining it. In Canada, it might not be as difficult. Here in America, it's getting very hard to obtain. Farm and Feed stores sell it as a pig and sheep de-wormer. The problem is, one is powder and the other is tablet form. The tablet form is still available, for pigs. However, this won't work for Redbugs, because of a stabilizer that's in the pill. The powder form, for sheep, seems to have completely vanished from shelves, overnight, last year. No Farm and Feed store has been able to get it.

Can't use Hikari's Prazi Pro? It has it in liquid form ... but yeah probably need the pond version to get it. I think it is listed as < 5% ?

Not sure if the stabilizer (Oxybispropanol) is an issue though

BTW, I do understand why your thread was closed, and it was nothing against you. Even though the forum is an "international" forum, the owner and severs reside in the USA. Because of this, they have to follow the laws of the USA.

I think, had it been worded differently, it may have been allowed. If it had only been worded as an informational thread, only about the ingredients... it may have been different.

Even if it is located in the US, is there a US law that prohibits talking about the content of a prescribed drug (especially when it's content is very well documented in public domain by the manufacturer). Nowhere in my thread I said about purchasing it without a vet's note or smuggling in or other illegal activities of that sort.

In fact, the discussion was trying to see if there's an alternative that we can work with a more readily available ingredients so hobbyists does not have rely on the less accessible channels to obtain it. So my assessment of the RC dictatorship holds - no wonder all the reef gurus left them.

Anyways, update to the info, Reef Aquarium Vol 3, did mention that it is actually the smaller amount - Milbemycin oxime that is required to kill the red bugs.. so we really don't have a choice. :( Thx everybody for the help

I actually just spoke with my vet, who prescribes me Interceptor. She looked it up for me and there is no praziquantel in Interceptor. The only active ingredient is Milbemycin. Milbemycin is a parisiticide. She did mention that there are other medications that are identical to Milbemycin, that should work. She's going to do some research and get back to me. Praziquanel is a de-wormer and actually works for Flatworms, not Red Bugs. Milbemycin AND Praziquenel are found in combination, in a drug called Milbemax, which is also prescription. You also linked to a drug called "Interceptor Spectrum," which seems to be a combination of the 2 drugs.

I won't argue about the other forums moderators, because I partially agree with your assessment...lol. However, it was probably your link to the drug, for sale, that probably got your thread closed. The link seems to be a non USA site, that may allow Interceptor to be purchased, without a prescription. That may have been what got the thread closed. The Moderator who closed your thread did, at least, explain Interceptor and how it differs from the research you did and the link you provided. Interceptor must be different from Interceptor Spectrum, since Interceptor does not contain Praziquanel. Interceptor Spectrum seems to be a combination drug, for treating Dog Heart worm AND Tape worms.

I'm always reading labels to find something wierd, that no one knows about, that has the ingredients we need for some of our magic solutions :) Anyhow...

Found this interesting summary from the NIH in 1995 about the use of milbemycin oxide in the treatment of mange and scabies, which can often be a more over the counter type of treatment in farm animals : http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1687217/pdf/canvetj00338-0044.pdf

I couldn't find any mange treatments on the internet that included milbemycin oxide, but who knows?
